WordPress, the popular platform for bloggers and publishers, users can now seamlessly connect with the broader online community through an official ActivityPub plugin. This exciting development was announced today by WordPress.com, making it easier for WordPress users to join the fediverse.
ActivityPub is a protocol that enables social networks to communicate across different platforms. This means users can interact with content on various platforms without the hassle of creating new accounts. The integration of ActivityPub into WordPress [.com] is the result of Automattic, the company that owns WordPress [.com], acquiring the ActivityPub for WordPress plugin earlier this year. Now, this feature is readily available for installation through WordPress settings.

For WordPress [.com] bloggers, this means that their audiences can follow them on other federated platforms such as Mastodon. What makes this integration even more exciting is that responses and interactions on other platforms will seamlessly transform into comments on the blogger’s WordPress posts. This enables direct engagement with a broader audience, even if they are not on the WordPress platform.
This new ActivityPub setting is available across WordPress [.com] sites, including those on free, personal, and premium tiers. This expansion means that millions of blogs now have the opportunity to become a part of the fediverse, with just a few clicks.
The official ActivityPub support for WordPress comes at a time when social networks are actively seeking ways to compete with established platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter). Users are exploring alternatives such as Mastodon, Bluesky, Meta’s Threads, and even Tumblr (owned by Automattic). Each of these platforms has experienced intermittent surges in user engagement, but they often maintain their unique and competitive atmospheres.
Meta, for instance, has expressed intentions to integrate Threads into the fediverse in the future, potentially allowing content shared there to be accessible on other platforms like Mastodon or WordPress. However, as of now, this integration has not been fully realized. Nevertheless, Meta has taken steps to verify Threads profiles via Mastodon in recent months, suggesting that the vision of a more interconnected online ecosystem is still on the horizon.
