WhatsApp is finally coming to Garmin smartwatches in an official way, and it’s a bigger deal than it might sound at first glance. For the first time, Garmin users can actually use WhatsApp from the wrist instead of just mirroring phone notifications and firing off basic canned replies.
WhatsApp’s new app lives in Garmin’s Connect IQ Store and is free to download for compatible models. It works with select fēnix, Forerunner, Venu and vívoactive watches, so most mid-range and higher-end Garmin users should see an “install” button show up once the rollout hits their region. As usual, you still need a paired Android or iPhone with WhatsApp installed, because the watch is essentially acting as a smarter companion, not a standalone messaging device.
Once set up, the experience goes well beyond simple notifications. You can glance at recent chats, open a thread and see up to 10 messages of history right on the watch, which is handy if you missed a flurry of texts during a run or meeting. There’s a built-in keyboard for replies, quick emoji reactions, and the watch will also show incoming WhatsApp calls with an option to decline them from your wrist. Crucially, Meta and Garmin stress that end-to-end encryption still applies, so your messages and calls remain private in the same way they are on your phone.
For Garmin, this is also a strategic moment. WhatsApp is officially the first third‑party messaging app on Garmin smartwatches, unlocked through its Connect IQ developer platform. Until now, Garmin has leaned heavily on fitness features and basic phone notifications, while rivals like Apple and Samsung offered richer app ecosystems and deeper messaging integration. Bringing a service used by billions straight to the wrist makes Garmin’s wearables feel a lot more like full smartwatches, especially for users who’d rather leave their phone in a pocket or gym locker.
If you want to try it, the process is simple: open the Connect IQ Store app on your phone (via Google Play or the App Store), search for “WhatsApp,” then install it on your compatible Garmin watch. Once linked to your existing WhatsApp account on your phone, you’ll start seeing chats and calls on your wrist almost immediately, with controls to reply, react, and decline calls as you go about your day. For regular WhatsApp users who live in Garmin’s ecosystem, this is one of those small quality‑of‑life updates that will quietly become essential.
