The pandemic forced people to stay in their homes. This led to a surge in the use of smartphones. People no longer have to leave their sofas to check the latest Spectrum internet packages. A simple tap on your smartphone screen provides you with all the information you need.

The use of mobile applications and Internet of Things (IoT) devices is increasing tremendously. The mobile app development industry is experiencing a boom. There’s no denying that mobile applications have transformed business and marketing models.

What is a Mobile Application?

A mobile application refers to a software application or computer program that runs on mobile devices like smartphones, watches, or tablets. In contrast, desktop and web applications run on desktop computers and mobile web browsers, respectively

What are the Different Categories of Mobile Apps?

Apps are broadly classified into six main categories: gaming, entertainment, health & lifestyle, productivity, social media, and educational apps. You will find millions of apps that overlap across a few of the said categories. However, it is important to note that developers use an app’s primary function to determine its category.

Gaming Apps

Gaming apps are perhaps the most important types of mobile applications in the world today. They also make up the biggest portion of the pie when it comes to downloads. It is safe to say that gaming apps have a world of their own, and it is pretty big. There are millions of gaming apps targeting different segments of a worldwide audience.

Social Media Apps

This app category is pretty much self-explanatory. Social media apps are widely popular. Moreover, they are among the most used apps. The total number of social media users is in the billions. Popular social media apps include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

Entertainment Apps

This category is also popular among mobile app users. These apps let users watch entertaining and engaging content uploaded by other users. The purpose of these apps is to provide entertainment to users. YouTube and TikTok are among the most downloaded entertainment apps of all time. Streaming services like Netflix and Spotify have also released their own apps to provide engaging video and audio content to millions around the world.

Lifestyle Apps

This category includes apps we use for convenience. Think apps you use to commute, keep your body and mind healthy, or just to order food. From travel to fitness to dating, the lifestyle app category covers a lot of ground.

Productivity Apps

Did you know that mobile apps were originally intended for productivity assistance? Public demand, however, paved the way for their expansion. Apps that allow users to send and receive emails and manage office-related tasks are great tools. Today, we have apps for cloud-based technologies, emails, and employee self-service.

Educational Apps

This particular category is experiencing unprecedented growth. Perhaps educational apps have benefitted the most in the aftermath of the pandemic. The mass closure of educational institutes forced educationists to rethink their teaching methodology. This led to the widespread availability of educational apps like Duolingo, Photomath, and Google Classroom.

Which Mobile App Category Will Dominate 2022?

No one category will enjoy widespread acclaim but several. The pandemic has forced people to rely on medical tools. This has created a new appeal for health and fitness apps. From fixing appointments to monitoring health, medical apps can assist with multiple things. Health experts are of the view that medical apps will improve patient health in the long run.

Restaurant and grocery apps are also expected to remain in great use throughout this year and the ones to come after. Convenience apps let users order food and purchase groceries from the comfort of their homes. Gone are the days when people had to leave their homes to buy food or other essentials. Just download the app, select the items you want to purchase, type in the payment option and address, and voila.

E-learning and productivity apps will continue to benefit mobile app users. Apps like Duolingo allow users to learn new languages. They are interactive and have made learning a whole new fun. It is safe to say that mobile apps will remain in use for years to come.
