On Friday morning, Tesla introduced two new colors exclusive to Giga Berlin, adding Quicksilver and Midnight Cherry Red paint options to the Long Range and Performance Model Y for customers in Europe and the Middle East.
The new colors replaced the previously available Midnight Silver and Red Multi-Coat paint options (which are still available for the entry-level Model Y RWD), but they are more expensive than their predecessors.
However, in an email sent to customers on Friday, the automaker announced that existing reservation holders will receive a free upgrade to Quicksilver and Midnight Cherry Red. Customers are not required to take any action because their order has already been updated, according to the email.
According to the Design Studio, the first Model Y cars in these new colors should begin shipping in November.
Unfortunately, these new colors are unlikely to make their way to North America. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, stated in a tweet following the announcement that “Only Giga Berlin can make these colors, as paint shop was specially built to apply many fine layers of paint, giving it complexity not otherwise possible.”
This is despite Musk previously stating that their other Paint Shops in Fremont and Giga Shanghai would be upgraded over time. However, he added that it would be difficult, and it appears that as they developed the Giga Berlin Paint Shop, it became clear that it would be too difficult to achieve.
