Citroën is bringing back a beloved piece of its commercial vehicle history, reimagined for the electric age. The French automaker has unveiled the 2 CV Fourgonnette Concept, a modern interpretation of its classic compact delivery van that once served generations of tradespeople, shopkeepers, and delivery drivers.

Presented at the 2026 Paris Motor Show alongside the 2 CV Concept, the new design study combines the original vehicle’s distinctive character with a contemporary vision of practical, accessible electric mobility. It is a nostalgic nod to a simpler era of motoring, but with an eye toward what small commercial vehicles could look like today.

There is one important caveat, though: Citroën says the 2 CV Fourgonnette Concept is a design study and does not preview a production model in the short term. For now, it is an expression of the design team’s creativity rather than a new electric van customers can expect to order.

A classic delivery van gets an electric-era makeover

The original 2 CV Fourgonnette earned its place in French automotive history by being useful rather than flashy. Built around the practical philosophy of the Citroën 2 CV, the light commercial vehicle became a familiar sight among small businesses and working professionals who needed straightforward, dependable transportation.

Citroën’s new concept revisits that legacy without treating it as a blueprint that must be copied exactly. Instead, the design team has reinterpreted the model’s instantly recognizable silhouette through a contemporary lens, aiming to preserve its approachable personality while imagining how the vehicle might fit into modern working life.

The concept is designed as the commercial counterpart to the 2 CV Concept, sharing the broader philosophy of simplicity, ingenious design, and ease of use. Both vehicles reflect Citroën’s idea that electric mobility should feel accessible and human, rather than becoming an exercise in technology for its own sake.

That approach also makes the Fourgonnette concept more than a styling exercise in retro design. It connects a historic vehicle associated with everyday work to the changing needs of businesses that increasingly have to consider electric transportation.

Citroën wants practical electric mobility to have personality

Electric vans are often discussed in terms of range, charging times, payload capacity, and operating costs. Those considerations remain essential for commercial buyers, but Citroën is using this concept to highlight a different part of the equation: character.

The company’s designers wanted to bring back the qualities that made the original Fourgonnette memorable, including its simplicity, accessibility, and clever approach to everyday tasks. In Citroën’s vision, a vehicle designed for work does not have to look anonymous or feel devoid of personality.

Citroën CEO Xavier Chardon described the original Fourgonnette as more than a work tool, emphasizing its place in everyday life and the emotional connection it created with its owners. The new concept is intended to recapture that spirit while adapting it to the idea of modern electric mobility.

The concept also reflects Citroën’s longstanding relationship with professional drivers and businesses. The automaker says it has supported working customers for more than a century, developing vehicles intended to make their daily routines easier.

However, Citroën has not announced production specifications, battery capacity, driving range, charging performance, cargo volume, payload figures, pricing, or a release date for the concept. Those details should not be assumed from the design study alone.

A design study, not a confirmed electric van

The 2 CV Fourgonnette Concept’s immediate significance lies in what it represents for Citroën’s design direction, rather than what it promises to deliver to dealerships.

By pairing the concept with the 2 CV Concept at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Citroën is revisiting an important part of its heritage while exploring how its familiar design identity could translate into contemporary electric vehicles. The commercial version also draws attention to a category in which practicality and affordability can matter just as much as headline-grabbing technology.

Whether the concept eventually influences a production vehicle remains an open question. Citroën has explicitly said it is not a preview of a near-term production model, so there is no confirmed electric successor to the historic Fourgonnette to put on a shopping list yet.

For now, the concept serves as a reminder that the future of electric commercial vehicles does not have to be defined by efficiency figures alone. Sometimes, the most interesting idea is to take a familiar shape that once helped people get their work done and imagine how it might do the same for another generation.
