Squarespace, the world’s most popular website builder and Google Workspace reseller announced its acquisition of Google Domains, a leading domain registration service. This unexpected transaction involves the transfer of approximately 10 million domains, with the closure anticipated by the third quarter of 2023. The CEO and founder of Squarespace, Anthony Casalena, expressed his pride in being chosen to serve Google Domains’ customers and emphasized the critical role of domains in every business’s online presence.

Squarespace, known for its intuitive website-building platform, has signed an agreement with Google to acquire all assets of Google Domains. While the news caught many off guard, this strategic move signifies Squarespace’s commitment to expanding its domain registration business. As part of the acquisition, Google Domains will undergo a transition period while winding down its operations.

Anthony Casalena, Founder & CEO of Squarespace, expressed his excitement about the acquisition and the opportunity to serve Google Domains’ customers. Casalena acknowledges that domains are an integral component of web infrastructure and essential to any business’s online presence. Squarespace’s track record of serving millions of users with their domain products instills confidence in a seamless transition for the acquired customers.

Existing Google Domains customers need not worry about the fate of their domains. Squarespace has assured a smooth transition by honoring current Google Domain pricing for a year following the acquisition. This commitment ensures stability and continuity for domain owners during the transitional phase. Additionally, customers who purchase domains through Google Workspace will experience a billing transition to Squarespace, given Squarespace’s role as a Google Workspace reseller.

While Squarespace is widely recognized for its Software as a Service (SaaS) website builder, this acquisition solidifies its position as a domain registrar as well. Squarespace’s domain registration business, which includes a robust domain management tool, enables individuals and businesses to effortlessly establish their online presence. With this acquisition, Squarespace expands its customer base by welcoming approximately ten million additional domain owners into its ecosystem.

Squarespace offers domain registrations at competitive prices, ranging from $20 to $70. With the acquisition, the company plans to maintain the current Google Domain pricing for a year, ensuring a seamless transition for domain owners. Moreover, Squarespace commits to providing billing and support services to Google Workspace customers who signed up through Google Domains, allowing them the flexibility to make changes to their domain accounts at any time.
