Deep in the halls of the US national security apparatus, a closely guarded secret project has been unfolding over the past two years. SpaceX, a space company led by Elon Musk, has been quietly assembling a new division called Starshield. Its mission? To construct a vast network of spy satellites for the United States’ powerful intelligence community.

The revelation, brought to light by Reuters through unnamed sources familiar with the classified program, sheds new light on the extent of SpaceX’s entanglement with the US government’s surveillance and reconnaissance efforts. According to the report, Starshield has been operating under a secretive contract awarded by the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) in 2021, with a value of $1.8 billion.

The ambitious project aims to deploy hundreds of low-orbiting satellites equipped with advanced Earth-imaging capabilities, forming an interconnected swarm capable of monitoring activities across the globe with unprecedented precision and speed. While details remain scarce, the implications are profound – a substantial leap in the US intelligence community’s ability to rapidly identify and track potential targets on an unprecedented scale.

Whispers of this clandestine endeavor first surfaced in February when The Wall Street Journal reported on a classified $1.8 billion SpaceX contract with an unnamed government agency. Now, Reuters has filled in the blanks, confirming that the NRO is the secretive client behind the Starshield initiative.

Cloaked in secrecy, the project’s specifics remain largely obscured. Reuters‘ sources could not confirm when the satellite network would become operational or disclose the identities of other companies potentially involved in the program. However, the report notes that a US database of space objects lists unacknowledged satellites deployed by SpaceX, which sources have identified as Starshield prototypes.

SpaceX’s foray into the realm of national security is not entirely new. Musk himself has tweeted that Starshield “will be owned by the US government and controlled by the DoD Space Force.” Last fall, the company’s government-focused division secured a contract with the US Space Force to provide satellite communications for the military via the Starlink network.

While the NRO has remained tight-lipped, declining to comment on SpaceX’s involvement, a spokesperson confirmed the agency’s broader mission: “to develop the most capable, diverse, and resilient space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance system the world has ever seen.”
