It’s been over a decade. Since players first hit the streets of Los Santos back in 2013, the gaming world has cycled through three console generations, a global pandemic, and countless rumors about what Rockstar Games was cooking up next. But the agonizing wait is finally over. Almost 13 years after the last mainline Grand Theft Auto dropped, preorders for Grand Theft Auto 6 are officially live. And yes, its impending arrival is already leaving a massive crater in the 2026 gaming landscape.

Once Rockstar slapped a firm November 19 release date on the calendar, the rest of the industry practically cleared out. It’s actually fascinating to watch; August through October are jam-packed with heavy hitters from other studios, but November is a complete ghost town. No one wants to go head-to-head with the cultural juggernaut that is the return to Vice City. It seems every other studio expects this game to hit the market with the force of an extinction-level event, and they’re all scrambling to stay out of the blast zone.

So, how do you secure a ticket to the neon-soaked state of Leonida? Preorders have popped up everywhere you’d expect. Digital copies are ready to be claimed directly through the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store, and the Rockstar Games Store. For those who prefer traditional retail, major storefronts like Amazon, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and GameStop also have their landing pages up and running. But before clicking the checkout button, the price is worth talking about. The base game is going to run $79.99. It’s a bitter pill to swallow—gamers are still getting used to the $70 standard that rolled out a few years ago—but it’s not entirely shocking for a cinematic experience that’s likely going to offer hundreds of hours of playtime.

For those with a little extra cash to spend, there’s also the $99.99 Ultimate Edition. This isn’t just your standard “here’s a shiny gun and a cool jacket” upgrade. Rockstar is doing something a bit different this time around by locking five exclusive in-game storefronts behind the Ultimate Edition paywall. This includes access to spots like Rideout Customs for vehicle mods, Sara’s Unisex Salon for hairstyles, and Electric Fang Tattoo. It’s essentially a bundle of cosmetic skins disguised as in-game real estate. Some folks in the community are understandably annoyed, viewing it as a sneaky way to normalize a $100 price tag without calling it that, but it won’t wall off any parts of the actual story centered around the two new protagonists, Jason and Lucia.

There is one major catch for the physical media purists out there, though. Anyone hoping to slide a shiny new GTA 6 disc into their console on launch day might be out of luck. Retailers and recent announcements confirm that the initial physical release—slated to ship a week early on November 12 for pre-loading purposes—is basically just an empty plastic box containing a download code. Some gaming shops have even refused to stock the physical game because of this format. It begs the question: why pay for shipping and environmental waste just to put an empty case on a shelf? Unless Rockstar pulls a classic physical disc release out of their hat later this winter, it might be easier to save the plastic and just buy it digitally.

There are still a few months to go before players can fully dive into the criminal underworld of this modern, Florida-inspired playground. And let’s be honest, the real chaos won’t be in Vice City—it’ll be on launch day when Rockstar’s servers try to handle the weight of millions of players logging on simultaneously. But for now, the preorder offers a little peace of mind. There is no need to stay up until midnight or jump through hoops with a VPN; the digital stock isn’t going anywhere. Just fire up a browser, lock in a copy, and get ready. Thirteen years was a long time to wait, but the finish line is finally in sight.
