Samsung seems to be chasing with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold7, if the latest leaks are anything to go by. Word on the street—or rather, the internet—is that Samsung’s next big foldable is about to give Oppo’s super-sleek Find N5 a serious run for its money. And honestly, after years of watching Samsung play catch-up in the foldable game, this could be the moment it finally leaps ahead.

The scoop comes from OnLeaks, a reliable name in the leak world, teaming up with Android Headlines to drop some render details. According to their renders—built from insider info—the Z Fold7 is clocking in at just 4.5mm thick when unfolded. To put that in perspective, Oppo’s Find N5, currently the thinnest book-style foldable on the planet, is a hair slimmer at 4.2mm. Honor’s Magic V3, which held the crown before Oppo swooped in, sits at 4.4mm. Samsung’s current champ, the Z Fold6, is a chunkier 5.6mm. So, yeah, this is a big deal—a razor-thin leap forward that could make the Z Fold7 the slimmest foldable you can snag in the U.S.

Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which launched late last year, measures 5.1mm when open—not bad, but not in the same league. And the OnePlus Open? It’s still rocking a beefy 5.8mm profile, and OnePlus has already waved the white flag, saying there’s no new foldable coming from them in 2025. Samsung’s clearly gunning for the top spot here, and if these leaks pan out, it might just get there.

Things get a little fuzzier when we talk about the Z Fold7’s thickness when folded shut. The report pegs it at 9.5mm with the camera bump included, and “closer to 9mm” without it. But here’s where I raise an eyebrow: the camera bump on these new renders looks way more pronounced than 0.5mm. If you’ve seen the images floating around (and trust me, they’re worth a Google), it’s sticking out like a sore thumb—more so than on the Z Fold6. Something’s off with those numbers, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some clarification down the line. For now, let’s just say it’s thin—but maybe not that thin—when folded.

What’s really cool, though, is how Samsung’s reportedly pulling this off. The Z Fold7 is said to be packing bigger screens: an 8.2-inch inner display (up from 7.6 inches on the Z Fold6) and a wider 6.5-inch cover screen. More real estate could mean more room to shuffle components around, letting Samsung slim down the body while still cramming in the same 4,400mAh battery as its predecessor. That’s no small feat—battery life’s been a sore spot for foldables, and keeping it steady while shedding thickness is a win in my book.

Beyond the slim-down, the Z Fold7’s rumored specs are enough to make any tech nerd drool. Android Headlines says it’ll be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, the latest and greatest chip that’s already turning heads in early benchmarks. If true, that means snappy performance, better efficiency, and maybe even a little extra juice for those big screens.

The camera’s getting some love too. The leak points to a beefy 200-megapixel main sensor—a huge jump from the 50-megapixel shooter on the Z Fold6. That could mean sharper shots, better low-light performance, and some serious zoom chops, though we’ll have to wait for real-world tests to know for sure. The rest of the setup sounds familiar: a 10-megapixel telephoto and a 12-megapixel ultrawide, both carried over from the last model. Solid, if not groundbreaking.

Mark your calendars—sort of. The Z Fold7 is expected to drop in July 2025, likely alongside the Galaxy Z Flip7, Samsung’s clamshell contender. That tracks with their usual summer launch window for foldables, giving us a few months to speculate wildly and hoard spare cash.

There’s also been buzz about Samsung unveiling a trifold phone at the same event—you know, one of those futuristic devices that unfolds twice into a tablet-sized screen. But hold your horses: leaker Max Jambor threw cold water on that idea, tweeting that the trifold’s been pushed back to “a later point in time.” Disappointing? Maybe. But if it means Samsung’s focusing on nailing the Z Fold7 instead, I’m not complaining.

Look, foldables have come a long way since Samsung kicked things off with the original Galaxy Fold back in 2019. Those early days were rough—creaky hinges, fragile screens, and a vibe that screamed “cool experiment” more than “daily driver.” But now? They’re legit. And with the Z Fold7, Samsung might finally have a device that’s not just cutting-edge but also practical—thin enough to slip into your pocket without feeling like you’re lugging around a brick.

The real test will be how it holds up. Thinner designs can mean trade-offs: less durability, trickier heat management, or a battery that can’t keep up. Oppo’s Find N5 and Honor’s Magic V3 have set a high bar, but they’re not widely available in the U.S. Samsung’s got a chance to own this market if it can deliver on both form and function.

For now, we’re stuck in rumorville, piecing together leaks like detectives. But if the Z Fold7 lives up to the hype—slimmer, bigger, and better—it could be the foldable we’ve all been waiting for. July can’t come soon enough.
