Samsung’s Unpacked event today wasn’t just about foldables. The company also took the wraps off its newest wearable lineup: the Galaxy Watch8 series. Clad in a refreshed “cushion design,” these watches show Samsung doubling down on comfort, health insights and, for the first time, on-device AI powered by Google’s Gemini assistant.

Samsung claims the standard Watch8 measures just 8.6mm thick, making it roughly 11 percent slimmer than last year’s Watch7 (9.7mm) and improving comfort by about 12 percent thanks to reduced case movement on the wrist. The slim profile is immediately noticeable: the aluminum “squircle” case hugs the wrist without feeling bulky, and the new dynamic lug system minimizes the gap between watch and strap, making band swaps nearly effortless.

One of the most talked‑about additions is the Antioxidant Index test, which uses the optical heart‑rate sensor to estimate your carotenoid levels in roughly five seconds. While it’s too early to judge accuracy, the novelty alone could drive healthier choices, and Samsung plans to roll out deeper clinical validation later this year.

Beyond antioxidants, Samsung’s One UI 8 Watch (based on Wear OS 6) introduces a suite of “Labs” features under Samsung Health. You’ll find a Vascular Load indicator to monitor cardiovascular strain, a Digital Running Coach offering real‑time pacing tips, and Bedtime Reminders to nudge you toward more consistent sleep cycles. During our quick workout simulation, the running coach adapted its cues based on our pace, and the bedtime reminders popped up on time—even without our phone nearby.

Perhaps the biggest leap software‑wise is the watch’s integration of Google’s Gemini AI. For the first time, you can access a full‑powered AI assistant directly on your wrist—no phone required, as long as you’re on Wi‑Fi or LTE. Ask Gemini to draft a quick text, set calendar events, control your smart home, or even get on‑wrist health insights without lifting a finger. Under the hood, Wear OS 6 brings a Material 3‑based interface overhaul that makes the display feel more spacious and boosts battery efficiency by around 10 percent, according to early tests.

Visually, the Watch8 retains last year’s “cushion design” but refines it with sleeker lines and four fresh colorways: Graphite, Silver, Pink Gold, and Titanium Blue (the latter exclusive to the Ultra model). The round AMOLED screen now peaks at an astonishing 3,000 nits, ensuring legibility even under direct sunlight—essential for outdoor activities. The always‑on display sees improvements too, with smoother transitions and less battery drain.

Samsung is offering two main variants:

  • Galaxy Watch8 (standard): Available in 40mm and 44mm sizes, Bluetooth and LTE options. Starts at $349.99 for the 40mm Bluetooth model, with LTE and larger sizes adding $30–$80 to the price.
  • Galaxy Watch8 Classic: Comes only in a 46mm size, featuring the beloved rotating bezel, 64GB of storage and a 445mAh battery for up to 56 hours of mixed‑use battery life. Priced at $499.99, it caters to Samsung purists who appreciate tactile controls.

And for the adventure seekers, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Watch Ultra at $649.99, packing 64GB of storage, a titanium chassis, and extended battery life of up to 100 hours in low‑power mode. Preorders for all three models are open now, with general availability starting July 25, 2025.

With the Watch8 series, Samsung isn’t just trimming millimeters; it’s bolstering health‑tracking credibility, streamlining smartwatch OS navigation, and most notably, putting a powerful AI companion on your wrist. Whether you’re a data‑driven athlete, a wellness enthusiast eyeing new biometric insights, or simply someone who wants hands‑free AI at a glance, the Galaxy Watch8 lineup stakes a compelling claim in a crowded wearable market. It remains to be seen how accurate features like the Antioxidant Index will prove in the real world, but with Gemini in tow, Samsung is betting you’ll wear—and talk to—your watch more than ever.
