Samsung has rolled out its much-anticipated Galaxy S25 series, introducing the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus, and the flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra. This launch, set against the backdrop of competition from Apple‘s iPhone 16 lineup, places a significant emphasis on AI enhancements, aiming to redefine user interaction with mobile devices.

The Galaxy S25 series maintains Samsung’s classic design ethos but introduces a few tweaks, especially noticeable in the S25 Ultra. This model features rounded edges for enhanced ergonomics, positioning it as the slimmest, lightest, and most durable Ultra device Samsung has produced. The Ultra sports a 6.9-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the S25 Plus and S25 come with 6.7-inch and 6.2-inch screens, respectively.

The use of a titanium frame alongside Corning’s Gorilla Armor 2 on the front display adds a layer of durability, promising better drop protection and scratch resistance. This material choice mirrors Apple’s Ceramic Shield, highlighting Samsung’s commitment to robustness in its flagship devices.

The S25 Ultra is silver with four camera lenses and an LED flash arranged in a vertical line. The S25 Plus is blue with three camera lenses and an LED flash also arranged vertically. The S25 is white with a similar camera and flash arrangement as the S25 Plus. The Samsung logo is visible on the back of each phone.

Each phone features three vertically aligned camera lenses in the top left corner, along with a flash. The Samsung logo is visible at the bottom center of each phone. The background is a gradient of light blue shades, providing a clean and modern look.

Each phone has a rectangular shape with rounded corners and features a prominent camera setup with multiple lenses and sensors. The colors of the phones from left to right are light purple, white, black, and beige. The Samsung logo is visible on the lower part of the back of each phone.

Under the hood, all S25 models are powered by the customized Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, utilizing a 3nm manufacturing process for superior efficiency. This chip brings about a 37% boost in CPU performance, 30% in GPU performance, and a significant 40% improvement in neural processing, directly impacting AI capabilities on the device. This on-device processing capability aligns with Apple’s strategy to handle AI tasks locally for privacy and efficiency.

For gaming enthusiasts, the introduction of the Vulkan Engine with enhanced ray tracing aims to narrow the gap with Apple’s offerings. Additionally, thermal management has been enhanced with a 40% larger vapor chamber, ensuring sustained performance during intensive tasks.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra steps up its camera game with a new 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens, complementing the 200-megapixel main sensor and a 50-megapixel 5x telephoto lens. The upgrade in the ultra-wide camera is exclusive to the Ultra model, offering better macro photography. All models support 10-bit HDR recording, which Samsung claims provides four times richer color expression, enhancing detail in various lighting scenarios.

A notable addition is the Audio Eraser feature, akin to Apple’s Audio Mix, which allows users to remove unwanted sounds from videos selectively. The series also introduces new analog filters for a film-like aesthetic and a Virtual Aperture for depth control, alongside Galaxy Log recording for professional video editing.

AI enhancements

Samsung positions the S25 series as a “true AI companion,” with features like:

  • Personal Data Engine: Utilizes on-device learning for personalized AI experiences.
  • Now Brief: A feature similar to iPhone’s Dynamic Island, providing daily briefings and context-aware suggestions.
  • Circle to Search: Enhanced to recognize and act on phone numbers, emails, and URLs directly from the screen.
  • Quick GIFs: Allows users to create GIFs or wallpapers from video content with Circle to Search.
  • Actionable searches: Offers action suggestions based on what you’re searching for or highlighting.
  • Natural language processing: Improved understanding for more intuitive device control.
  • Third-party integration: Seamless interaction between Samsung, Google, and other apps like Spotify through Gemini AI.
  • Multi-step commands: Execute complex tasks with single commands, such as scheduling and sharing events.
  • Portrait studio: Enhanced avatar creation with more lifelike facial expressions.

Pricing and availability

The Galaxy S25 Ultra is priced at $1,299.99 for the 256GB model, with the S25 Plus at $999.99 and the entry-level S25 at $799.99, directly competing with Apple’s pricing strategy. Preorders are open, with Samsung offering incentives like a $50 discount for early reservations, up to $1,250 in trade-in credit, and exclusive color options for direct purchases from their site.

The official launch date for these devices is set for February 7, marking another step in Samsung’s ongoing narrative of blending hardware prowess with AI innovation.
