Samsung yesterday announced it will bring its new Galaxy AI features to older Galaxy phones and tablets via a software update beginning in March. The update will bring AI-powered capabilities like enhanced photography, video calling, and text capabilities to Galaxy devices going back a year.
Galaxy AI debuted last month on Samsung’s brand new Galaxy S24 lineup. The AI tools utilize natural language processing and generative AI to allow users to do things like remove objects from photos, translate languages in real-time during calls, and more. Samsung says it wants to bring these futuristic features to more devices, not just its newest flagship phones.
The Galaxy AI update will start rolling out in late March to the Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy S23 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Tab S9. In total, Samsung estimates over 100 million existing devices will get the upgrade.
“In the near future, select Galaxy wearables will use AI to enhance digital health and unlock a whole new era of expanded intelligent health experiences,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Samsung’s MX division, in a press release.
The move to expand Galaxy AI beyond its latest phones shows Samsung is eager to showcase its advancements in on-device AI. The company is playing catch up to Google, which previewed similar AI features last year and collaborated with Samsung on Galaxy AI.
However, robust natural language processing and generative AI require immense computing power. Expanding Galaxy AI across two years of devices indicates Samsung is confident in both the capabilities of its AI silicon and the reliability of these futuristic features.
The Galaxy AI rollout begins next month. Samsung device owners can watch for the update by going to Settings > System updates > Check for system updates.
