Android Studio levels up with Gemma 4 local code assistant

Android Studio just plugged into Gemma 4, giving Android developers a powerful local AI coding partner that never sends project code to the cloud.

Android Studio just got a serious AI upgrade: it now hooks into Gemma 4, Google’s most powerful local model for agentic coding, so you can get ChatGPT-style help in your IDE without sending code to the cloud. In simple terms, it’s AI pair‑programming that runs on your own machine, tuned specifically for Android apps.

The big deal here is that Gemma 4 runs locally via providers like LM Studio or Ollama, so your project never leaves your laptop while the model reasons about it. That makes it especially attractive if you’re working with NDA code, client projects, or anything that legal really doesn’t want on third‑party servers. Because it’s local, you also don’t have to worry about API keys, usage caps, or surprise bills when you lean on the assistant heavily during crunch time.

Gemma 4 isn’t just a fancy autocomplete; it’s built for “agentic” workflows, which means it can plan and take multi‑step actions in your codebase. In Android Studio’s Agent Mode, you can ask for high‑level changes like “build a calculator app” or “extract all hardcoded strings into strings.xml,” and the model will generate UI code in Kotlin, follow Jetpack Compose best practices, scan multiple files, and apply edits across the project. You can even tell it “build my project and fix any errors,” and it will walk through build failures or lint issues, iteratively tweaking code until things compile.

Because everything runs on your own hardware, specs matter. Google recommends Gemma E2B or E4B for lighter setups and the Gemma 26B Mixture‑of‑Experts model if you’ve got a beefy dev machine. As a rough guide, Gemma E2B starts around 8GB RAM and 2GB storage, E4B jumps to about 12GB RAM and 4GB storage, while the 26B MoE model targets roughly 24GB RAM and 17GB of disk space when you include Android Studio in the total. The payoff is that you get near‑instant responses powered by your local CPU/GPU, instead of waiting on network latency.

Getting started is fairly straightforward: install the latest Android Studio, set up a local LLM provider like LM Studio or Ollama, add it under Settings → Tools → AI → Model Providers, then download a Gemma 4 variant that fits your hardware and pick it as the active model in Agent Mode. From there, the experience looks a lot like having a built‑in AI teammate that understands Android conventions out of the box—handy for prototyping features, refactoring legacy Java to Kotlin, or just grinding through boilerplate on a long day.
