If you’ve been following the tech news lately, you might have caught wind of an exciting new project brewing between Samsung, Qualcomm, and Google. The trio has been working on something big: a pair of mixed reality smart glasses that connect right to your smartphone. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon recently spilled the beans on what’s in the works during an interview with CNBC.

“It’s going to be a new product,” Amon said, hinting at a future where these glasses might become as common as your everyday sunglasses. His vision? He wants everyone with a phone to also have a pair of these companion glasses. “I think we need to get to the point that the glasses are going to be no different than wearing regular glasses or sunglasses,” Amon explained. The goal is to make these glasses so natural and commonplace that they become a seamless part of our daily lives.

Details about this project have been pretty scarce since the partnership was announced in early 2023. Although specifics have been kept under wraps, speculation has been rife. Many guessed that Samsung would roll out a mixed reality headset to rival Apple’s high-priced Vision Pro, which costs a whopping $3,499. Meanwhile, Google has been teasing its own AR glasses, which are expected to showcase its new Project Astra AI assistant, revealed at the Google I/O event this past May.

Amon also expressed his enthusiasm for the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses that debuted last year, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip. He’s particularly excited about how generative AI is shaping the future of mixed reality. According to him, AI is the secret ingredient that’s going to propel this market forward. “AI is going to run on the device. It’s going to run on the cloud,” Amon noted. “It’s going to run some in the glass, some in the phone, but at the end of the day, there’s going to be whole new experiences.”
