OpenAI, the creator of the widely-used ChatGPT, is actively pursuing additional financial support from its key investor, Microsoft. CEO Sam Altman shared insights into the company’s ambitious plans to delve into the realm of “superintelligence,” according to a recent report.

Earlier this year, Microsoft committed to a substantial investment of up to $10 billion in OpenAI, signaling a deepening collaboration between the two entities. The expanded partnership encompasses AI supercomputing and research initiatives, allowing both companies to independently commercialize the advanced AI technologies resulting from their joint efforts.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Altman expressed satisfaction with the ongoing collaboration with Microsoft, stating that the partnership is “working really well.” He indicated a strong expectation to secure additional funding in the future, emphasizing the need for financial support to advance research into more sophisticated artificial intelligence models.

Altman revealed a primary focus on exploring “how to build superintelligence” and securing the necessary computing power to achieve this goal. The overarching vision, as articulated by Altman, revolves around creating artificial general intelligence (AGI) that is not only powerful but also safe, with a keen understanding of the potential benefits.

AGI, often defined as possessing intelligence equal to humans, represents a theoretical concept rather than a tangible reality, according to companies like IBM. OpenAI’s CEO emphasized the significance of AGI by asserting its potential to revolutionize various domains, from autonomous agents performing routine tasks to addressing complex challenges in every industry.

OpenAI acknowledges the transformative impact of superintelligence on humanity, citing its potential to solve significant global problems. However, the organization also recognizes the inherent dangers, cautioning against the unchecked power of superintelligence that could potentially lead to the disempowerment or even extinction of humanity.

Altman disclosed ongoing efforts to develop the next iteration of ChatGPT, although specific details about the release date remain undisclosed. OpenAI’s commitment to advancing AI technologies and exploring the frontiers of superintelligence reflects a forward-looking approach to shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
