A dimly lit stage, a puff of smoke, and—poof!—the Four Horsemen are back. Lionsgate dropped the first official trailer for Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the third chapter in the slick, crowd-pleasing magician heist franchise, and it’s got all the razzle-dazzle you’d expect. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom), the film promises more mind-bending tricks, high-stakes cons, and a fresh batch of faces joining the original crew. Oh, and before we even get to the main act, Lionsgate’s already teasing a fourth movie. Abracadabra, indeed.

If you’ve been keeping up with the Now You See Me saga, you know the deal: a group of charismatic illusionists, known as the Four Horsemen, pull off impossible heists with a mix of sleight-of-hand, tech wizardry, and sheer audacity, all while staying one step ahead of the law. The original 2013 film was a surprise hit, blending Ocean’s Eleven-style swagger with Houdini-esque flair. Its 2016 sequel doubled down on the global stakes, and now, nearly a decade later, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is ready to deal another wild card.

The trailer kicks off with the return of the core gang. Jesse Eisenberg is back as J. Daniel “Danny” Atlas, the cocky mastermind whose smug grin is practically a character of its own. Woody Harrelson reprises his role as Merritt McKinney, the wise-cracking hypnotist who can talk his way out of (or into) anything. Dave Franco returns as Jack Wilder, the sleight-of-hand expert with a knack for pickpocketing, and Isla Fisher reappears as Henley Reeves, the escape artist who sat out the second film (replaced by Lizzy Caplan’s Lula).

Also back in the mix are Mark Ruffalo as Dylan Rhodes, the former FBI agent turned Horsemen ally, and Morgan Freeman as Thaddeus Bradley, the magic-debunker with a murky agenda. Freeman’s gravelly voiceover in the trailer alone is enough to make you lean in closer, wondering what secrets he’s holding this time.

But the real trick? The new blood. The trailer introduces a fresh crop of magicians, including Ariana Greenblatt (Barbie, Ahsoka), Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), and Justice Smith (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves). Details on their roles are still under wraps—classic magician misdirection—but the trailer hints they’re being recruited for a heist that’s bigger and riskier than anything the Horsemen have pulled before. Greenblatt, in particular, seems to be channeling some serious Gen-Z energy, with a quick quip that lands like a perfectly timed card trick.

So, what’s the job this time? The trailer keeps things vague (as a good magic show should), but here’s the gist: the Four Horsemen have been lying low, maybe even retired, after their last global caper. Something—or someone—pulls them back into the game, and they’re forced to assemble a new crew for a heist that involves, in true Now You See Me fashion, a lot of shiny tech, elaborate misdirection, and at least one moment where you’ll mutter, “Wait, how did they do that?”

The visuals are as flashy as ever: neon-lit stages, spinning card decks, and a sequence involving a drone swarm that looks like it was ripped from a sci-fi blockbuster. There’s also a tantalizing shot of Rosamund Pike in a sleek suit, smirking like she knows something we don’t. Is she a new Horseman? A rival? A puppet master pulling the strings? Place your bets now.

One thing’s clear: Fleischer is leaning hard into the franchise’s signature blend of wit and spectacle. The trailer’s pacing feels like a magic trick itself, cutting between high-energy set pieces and quieter moments of the Horsemen bickering like an old married quartet. Harrelson, as always, steals every scene he’s in, tossing out one-liners that land somewhere between charming and unhinged.

The Now You See Me series has always been a bit of a gamble—critics have called it everything from “delightfully absurd” to “a narrative house of cards”—but its box office success speaks for itself. The first film grossed over $350 million worldwide on a $75 million budget, while the sequel pulled in a respectable $334 million. Fans love the franchise’s unapologetic fun, and Lionsgate is clearly betting on that goodwill.

At CinemaCon earlier this month, Lionsgate unveiled a first look at the film and dropped a bombshell: a fourth movie is already in development, with Fleischer attached to direct. “We were so happy with the director’s cut, we’re already developing the next chapter,” said Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group, according to Variety. “We can’t wait for audiences to discover what he’s done with the third film and thrilled he’ll be making even more magic with us.”

Fleischer, who’s no stranger to blending action and humor, seems like a natural fit. He’s taking over from Jon M. Chu, who directed the second film but stepped away for other projects. The script for Now You See Me: Now You Don’t comes from a trio of writers—Eric Warren Singer (Top Gun: Maverick), Seth Grahame-Smith (The Lego Batman Movie), and Mike Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes)—which suggests a mix of high-octane thrills and playful banter.

Let’s be real: the Now You See Me movies aren’t high art. The plots can feel like a magician’s patter—distracting you with shiny objects while the real trick happens elsewhere. But there’s something undeniably addictive about watching these characters outsmart everyone, from Interpol to each other. It’s the fantasy of being the cleverest person in the room, wrapped in a glossy, popcorn-munching package.

The addition of new cast members like Pike and Greenblatt feels like a smart move to keep things fresh, especially as the franchise pushes past the decade mark. Pike, in particular, has a knack for playing characters who are three steps ahead of everyone else (Gone Girl, anyone?), and her presence could add a new layer of intrigue. Meanwhile, Greenblatt and Sessa represent a younger generation of talent, potentially setting up the Horsemen for a handoff in future films.

The trailer also leans into the series’ love of real-world magic. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the production worked with professional magicians and consultants to design tricks that feel authentic, even if they’re amped up for the big screen. Expect plenty of practical effects—think trapdoors, hidden compartments, and good old-fashioned card flourishes—mixed with just enough CGI to make your jaw drop.

With a release date set for November 14, 2025, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is poised to kick off the holiday movie season with a bang.

As for that fourth movie, details are scarce, but Lionsgate’s confidence suggests they’re not ready to make the Horsemen disappear anytime soon. Will we see the new recruits take center stage? Could Freeman’s Thaddeus finally get his own spotlight? Or will Eisenberg’s Danny pull off the ultimate trick and steal the franchise forever? Only time—and a few well-placed smoke bombs—will tell.

For now, the trailer for Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is a tantalizing sleight-of-hand, promising just enough to keep us hooked without revealing the full trick. So grab your deck of cards, practice your best poker face, and mark your calendars for November 2025. The Horsemen are back, and they’ve got one hell of a show up their sleeves.
