After years of speculation and a whirlwind of leaks, Nintendo has finally given gamers what they’ve been waiting for: an official glimpse into the future with the Nintendo Switch 2. Announced with a straightforward name that defies the company’s usual penchant for creative monikers, the Switch 2 is set to be the successor to the wildly successful Nintendo Switch, which has carved its place in gaming history with its hybrid design and a library of beloved titles.

The announcement came in a relatively understated fashion, a short trailer that confirmed not only the existence of the Switch 2 but also its aesthetic continuity with its predecessor. With a design that echoes the original Switch but with notable enhancements like magnetic Joy-Con attachments and a larger screen, Nintendo seems to be refining rather than reinventing the wheel.

The trailer’s highlight was a tease of what appears to be the next installment in the Mario Kart series, suggesting that this classic franchise might once again serve as a launch title, echoing the strategy that worked so well with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the original Switch. This revelation alone has sparked a wave of excitement across gaming communities, as Mario Kart has been a staple in Nintendo’s lineup for decades.

Games, games, and more games

The big question, of course, is “What games will we see?” The Switch 2 Direct, scheduled for April 2nd, promises to shed light on this. Beyond the new Mario Kart, there’s speculation about other heavy hitters.

  • Metroid Prime 4: There’s a buzz about this title potentially being a dual-release game, much like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” was for the Wii U and the original Switch. This could mean an ambitious leap in gameplay and graphics, leveraging the new hardware capabilities of the Switch 2 while still being accessible on the current Switch.
  • Super Mario Odyssey Follow-up: Given the success of Odyssey, fans are eager for another 3D Mario adventure. The Direct might unveil what Mario’s next grand journey will look like, potentially setting the stage for a new era of Mario games that take advantage of the Switch 2’s enhanced power.
  • Pokémon and Zelda: There’s always the hope for new entries or remakes in these storied franchises. Rumors and posts from gaming insiders on platforms like X suggest that a new open-world 3D Mario, Pokémon Legends Z-A, and possibly a new or remastered 2D Zelda might be in the cards for the Switch 2 launch window.

Backward compatibility

Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will support both physical and digital games from the original Switch, although some games might not be fully compatible. This move is a nod to the extensive library that Switch owners have built up over the years, ensuring a smooth transition to the new console without leaving their digital collections behind.

Experience events and what’s next

Nintendo isn’t stopping at a digital reveal. They’re planning hands-on experience events around the globe starting in April, where gamers can get a feel for the Switch 2. These events will kick off in major cities like New York and Paris, with more locations to follow in North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania.
