ChatGPT Business gets a Premium seat option at $100 a month

ChatGPT Business can now mix Standard and Premium seats in the same workspace, letting companies assign more capacity only where it’s needed.

OpenAI has officially made Premium seats available for ChatGPT Business, giving companies a way to reserve higher-capacity access for the people who spend the most time inside ChatGPT. The new tier costs $100 per user per month with annual billing, or $125 per user per month on a monthly plan.

For small businesses, startups, agencies, and teams where one or two people are doing the bulk of the AI-heavy work, the change is more practical than flashy. Instead of moving an entire workspace to a more expensive plan, administrators can keep most employees on standard ChatGPT Business seats and assign Premium seats only to power users – perhaps the developer using Codex throughout the day, the marketer producing campaign materials, or the analyst working through large files and recurring reports. OpenAI says the two seat types can be mixed in the same centrally managed workspace, then reassigned as a team’s needs change.

The core selling point is usage. Premium users receive five times the usage of a standard Business seat, and OpenAI says the tier does away with the five-hour usage limit associated with the standard experience. In its place are predictable weekly usage resets, a setup intended to make the service feel less stop-start for employees who rely on it for longer projects and repeated daily work.

That matters because AI subscriptions have increasingly become a capacity question, not just a feature checklist. A casual user may be perfectly comfortable with a standard seat for drafting an email, summarizing a document, or brainstorming an outline. But a teammate who is constantly analyzing spreadsheets, iterating on code, creating client presentations, researching markets, or building entire campaign workflows can hit limits at exactly the wrong moment. Premium is OpenAI’s answer for organizations that do not want those high-demand roles slowed down by the same allocation designed for occasional users.

The price difference is substantial. Standard ChatGPT Business seats cost $20 per person per month when billed annually, or $25 monthly. Premium costs five times as much on either billing cycle: $100 annually or $125 month-to-month. On paper, that mirrors the fivefold increase in included usage. In practice, the value depends on whether a particular employee is actually constrained by the standard tier often enough to justify the extra cost.

For a lean business, the mixed-seat model could be a useful part. A five-person company, for example, may not need five Premium subscriptions. It might make more sense to give the owner or operations lead and a technical employee Premium access, while leaving teammates who use ChatGPT occasionally on the lower-cost standard tier. That arrangement makes the business plan feel more like an IT purchasing tool than a one-size-fits-all subscription, which is where workplace AI products are increasingly headed.

There is also a clearer distinction between fixed subscriptions and usage-based expansion. Premium seats come with a fixed per-user monthly cost, but OpenAI says Business workspaces can also purchase shared workspace credits to extend usage beyond included rate limits. That gives organizations a fallback for temporary spikes in demand, such as a product launch, a busy client cycle, or a period of heavy coding and research work, without necessarily making every employee a permanent Premium user.

The rollout arrives as AI companies try to find a more realistic middle ground between entry-level team plans and costly enterprise contracts. ChatGPT Business already provides the shared workspace, administrative controls, and business-oriented privacy and security features that distinguish it from consumer subscriptions. The Premium option adds a way to allocate more computing capacity inside that same environment, rather than forcing a growing company to choose between limits for everyone and a much broader upgrade.

Still, the tier will not suit every business. ChatGPT Business requires a minimum of two seats per workspace, so solo operators looking for higher capacity may need to consider an individual subscription instead. The Business plan also has a maximum of 200 paid Standard and Premium seats combined per subscription, according to OpenAI’s current billing guidance. That makes the product most relevant to small and midsize teams, rather than organizations expecting to manage a massive workforce through a single Business workspace.

For businesses already paying for ChatGPT Business, Premium seats are now less about getting new headline features and more about removing friction for the people whose work depends on using the platform constantly. The real test will be whether that extra capacity turns into faster output, fewer interruptions, and enough saved time to make a $100-per-month seat feel like a sensible operating expense rather than another software bill.
