ChatGPT’s sticker maker is here, and it keeps backgrounds transparent

The new Stickers option in ChatGPT Images is designed for quick, custom packs that fit naturally into iMessage and WhatsApp conversations.

ChatGPT is leaning further into the everyday creative tools people actually use in group chats. Its latest Images feature can turn a photo, a prompt, or an inside joke into a custom sticker pack, with transparent backgrounds designed to make the results feel more like proper stickers than cropped images pasted into a conversation.

The new option is available from the Images area of ChatGPT: select Images in the sidebar, then choose Stickers to begin. From there, users can start with an idea or an existing image and generate a set of stickers intended for sharing through services such as iMessage and WhatsApp.

That transparent-background detail is more important than it may first sound. A normal AI-generated image often arrives as a rectangle, even when the subject is a character, object, or reaction face that should stand on its own. Sticker art needs the opposite: a clean cutout that sits naturally on top of a chat background, photo, or message bubble. Removing the surrounding backdrop makes a cartoon dog, a stylized selfie, or a tiny office in-joke look like it belongs in the sticker tray rather than in a camera roll.

Your browser does not support the video tag.

It also makes ChatGPT Images a little more practical. Generative image tools have become very good at producing a single amusing illustration, but getting from that image to something usable in a messaging app has often meant hopping between background-removal tools, image editors, and sticker-maker apps. ChatGPT is now trying to compress that workflow into one place: make the art, preserve transparency, and turn it into a pack that can be sent in chats.

The feature could be especially useful for the kind of stickers people tend to make on the fly. Think reaction packs built around a friend’s dog, playful versions of a family photo, visual shorthand for a work group chat, or a themed set for a birthday, sports night, or trip. Rather than needing illustration skills, users can describe a look – “cute retro pixel-art reactions,” for example – and iterate until the pack has the right personality.

OpenAI’s wording suggests the tool is not limited to stickers, either. The same transparent-background capability can be used for other ChatGPT-generated images, opening the door to cleaner assets for presentations, social posts, product mockups, and simple web graphics. For creators and small businesses, that may be the more lasting benefit: a quick way to generate isolated objects and characters without manually cutting them out of a busy background.

There are still some real-world limits to keep in mind. The quality of an AI sticker pack will depend heavily on the prompt, especially where consistency matters. A set of six expressions needs to look like the same character, not six distant cousins drawn in different styles. Users will likely get better results by being specific about the subject, art style, colors, outline thickness, facial expressions, and whether text should be included.

It is also worth being thoughtful when using photos of real people. Turning your own image or a willing friend’s photo into a cartoon sticker is one thing; making and sharing a pack based on someone else’s likeness without permission can quickly become awkward, even if the result is meant as a joke. The best sticker packs are usually built around shared humor, not surprise embarrassment.

Still, the update captures where consumer AI is heading. The most appealing new features are increasingly not the ones that sound futuristic in a keynote, but the ones that remove a few annoying steps from something people already do. In this case, ChatGPT is taking a familiar bit of internet culture – the custom reaction sticker – and making it easier to create without leaving the app.
