Microsoft yesterday announced that it will no longer be releasing major updates for Windows 10 and that the upcoming 22H2 version will be the last. The tech giant has indicated that it will focus on supporting the existing Windows 10 user base through regular security updates until October 14th, 2025. Although certain editions of the operating system, including those on the Long-Term Servicing Channel, will continue to receive updates after this date.
This development marks the end of an era for one of the world’s most widely-used operating systems. Since its release in 2015, Windows 10 has undergone several updates, each introducing new features and improvements. The latest iteration of Windows, Windows 11, was released in 2021, and Microsoft is encouraging users to transition to this new platform.
Given that Windows 11 has now been available for over a year and a half, the move to wind down support for Windows 10 may not come as a surprise. In January of this year, Microsoft ceased selling Windows 10 downloads, signaling the beginning of the end for the operating system. While the end of support for Windows 10 may be disconcerting for some users, it is worth noting that the end-of-life process is a natural part of the technology lifecycle.
