After a year filled with challenges and setbacks, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, formerly known as Facebook, addressed his employees in an all-hands meeting, outlining his plans to steer the company back on course. The meeting, held at Meta’s Menlo Park campus and live-streamed to employees worldwide, aimed to rally the staff after a turbulent period marked by layoffs and struggles to gain mainstream traction in the virtual reality space.

During the approximately half-hour address, Zuckerberg addressed the recent layoffs, acknowledging that tough decisions had to be made in order to build a better technology company that could deliver superior products at a faster pace. Meta had expanded rapidly during the peak of the pandemic, employing over 80,000 people, but the CEO recognized the need to evolve and rebuild the company culture.

The meeting took place in an outdoor pavilion called Hacker Square and featured presentations from other Meta executives, including Andrew Bosworth, the chief technology officer, and Chris Cox, the chief product officer. Cox discussed Meta’s plans to enhance Reels, Instagram‘s short-form video product, to better compete with TikTok, one of the company’s formidable rivals. Additionally, executives provided insights into Project 92, a social app in development at Meta, designed to function similarly to Twitter and integrate with other platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky.

While Meta has been working on artificial intelligence (AI) for several years, the company has been slower than competitors like Google and Microsoft in translating its research into consumer products. During the meeting, Zuckerberg unveiled Meta’s strategy for leveraging AI across its apps, including WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. The company aims to create accessible AI models that surpass those of its competitors, aligning with Zuckerberg’s vision for the metaverse.

Zuckerberg emphasized the importance of democratizing access to AI, highlighting its value in enabling various AI assistants and avoiding consolidation into a single dominating AI system. He envisioned AI assistants that could aid users in content creation, self-expression, and idea formulation, similar to a coach providing guidance and encouragement. Furthermore, Meta plans to integrate AI agents into products like WhatsApp, enhancing customer service experiences and enabling personalized AI algorithms for businesses.

To achieve these goals, Meta is heavily investing in open-source technology, intending to share its AI work with researchers interested in building their own algorithms based on Meta’s advancements. Although Meta has faced criticism for this approach, with concerns about the spread of misinformation and the need for tight control, Zuckerberg defended the strategy, highlighting the benefits of outside scrutiny and collaboration in improving Meta’s platforms.

Despite Meta’s focus on AI, Zuckerberg assured employees that the company remained committed to its Metaverse plans. He indicated that generative AI technology could eventually facilitate the creation of virtual world items and experiences. Furthermore, he hinted at the possibility of integrating Meta’s AI assistant into future versions of the company’s smart glasses, following the release of the initial smart Ray-Ban glasses in 2021.

In a subtle dig at Apple’s Vision Pro headset, which boasts high-end features and a price tag of $3,500, Zuckerberg emphasized Meta’s dedication to affordability and accessibility. He expressed satisfaction that Apple’s offering did not present any breakthrough solutions that Meta had not already explored. With Meta’s ongoing efforts to lower the price of its headsets, Zuckerberg underscored the differences in vision and values between the two companies, emphasizing Meta’s focus on social interaction and creating closer connections among people within the metaverse.

As Meta charts its course forward, Zuckerberg’s address sought to instill confidence and unity among the employees, providing clarity on the company’s strategic direction and ambitions. The challenges and transformations of the past year have laid the foundation for Meta’s renewed focus on technological innovation, AI integration, and the development of the metaverse.
