YouTube could be experimenting with something considerably bigger than video sharing. A teardown of its latest Android app has uncovered references to a mysterious project called “Tamba,” pointing to a potential standalone social experience with user profiles, followers, direct messages, group chats, and several other features typically associated with social networking platforms.

The discovery comes from version 21.44.534 of the YouTube app for Android, where Android Authority uncovered branding assets, interface icons, and code strings associated with the project. While there is no official announcement from Google, the findings suggest YouTube may be exploring a more comprehensive social experience beyond its existing video-focused platform.

What is YouTube Tamba?

The most interesting discovery is that Tamba appears to have its own identity rather than being just another feature inside the existing YouTube app.

Android Authority found a logo asset named yt_sandbox_topbar_logo_white, featuring the word “Tamba” alongside a distinctive hand-drawn symbol with a YouTube-style play button in its center. Another asset uses the same symbol independently, potentially serving as the project’s app icon.

The project also has a collection of 38 icons with a noticeably different visual style from YouTube’s familiar interface. These include icons for Home, Search, Create, Camera, Inbox, Chat, Stickers, Microphone, and user profiles.

Other references include a crown, a lock, a locked bookmark, and a game controller, although corresponding artwork for some of these elements has not yet appeared in the discovered assets.

The branding is tied to a separate Android package named com.google.android.youtube.sandbox. YouTube’s code reportedly checks whether it is running under this package and adjusts its behavior accordingly. The package also has dedicated search suggestion and file provider references, making Tamba look more like a separate application than an ordinary experimental interface.

Interestingly, the teardown also uncovered dedicated ANDROID_SANDBOX and IOS_SANDBOX client identifiers. That suggests Google could be considering experiments across both Android and iOS, although it does not confirm that a public app is coming to either platform.

DMs, group chats, followers, and more

The feature references are where Tamba gets particularly interesting. The discovered code includes notification types and interface strings associated with a fairly extensive collection of social networking features.

Users could potentially follow other accounts, receive follow requests, and approve or reject those requests. This could allow private profiles, something that the standard YouTube experience has not traditionally offered in the same way as Instagram.

Messaging also appears to be a major part of the experiment. The code references direct text messages, group chat invitations, accepted message requests, and notifications when someone adds another user to a group conversation.

The messaging experience could extend beyond text. References suggest users may be able to exchange photos and videos, while voice replies could provide another way to communicate. There are also indications that users might share YouTube Shorts directly within conversations.

Tamba’s social features appear to extend to posts as well. The discovered strings mention post hearts, Shorts interactions, comment replies, and notifications when someone responds to a video comment with a Short.

Some of the notable code references include:

  • NOTIFICATION_TYPE_SANDBOX_NEW_FOLLOWER
  • NOTIFICATION_TYPE_SANDBOX_FOLLOW_REQUEST
  • NOTIFICATION_TYPE_DIRECT_TEXT_MESSAGE_SANDBOX
  • NOTIFICATION_TYPE_GROUP_CHAT_USER_ADDED_SANDBOX
  • NOTIFICATION_TYPE_SANDBOX_POST_HEARTS
  • NOTIFICATION_TYPE_SANDBOX_POST_COMMENT_REPLY_OWNER_WITH_VOICE
  • NOTIFICATION_TYPE_SANDBOX_VIDEO_COMMENT_REPLY_OWNER_WITH_SHORT

Another particularly curious reference is PREONBOARD_NEW_FOLLOWER, which could indicate that people might be able to follow someone before that person has completed the onboarding process.

There are also references to a dedicated onboarding page and an activity page, suggesting that Tamba could have its own account setup and notification experience.

Why Tamba might remain an experiment

The word “sandbox” is an important clue. In software development, a sandbox generally refers to an isolated environment where developers can experiment with new features without affecting the main product. Several Tamba-related icons are also labelled as experimental in the code.

This suggests YouTube could be using Tamba as a testing ground for social networking features, potentially with a limited group of users, rather than preparing a finished product for an immediate public launch.

Interestingly, Tamba also appears to be different from YouTube’s regular internal testing environment. The code already references a separate com.google.android.youtube.test package, while Tamba has its own branding, onboarding references, and additional social functionality.

There is another reason the project deserves attention: YouTube is already bringing messaging features back to its main platform. The company began expanding its in-app private messaging experience in 2026, allowing eligible users to share videos and Shorts through one-on-one conversations without switching to another messaging service. Group chats have also been mentioned as part of its plans. YouTube’s expanded messaging rollout.

That creates an interesting possibility. Tamba could be where YouTube experiments with more ambitious social features before deciding which ones deserve a place in its main app. Alternatively, Google could be exploring an entirely separate social destination that combines video sharing, messaging, and user-generated posts.

For now, neither possibility is confirmed.

Google has not officially announced Tamba, explained what the name means, or provided any release timeline. The discovery is based on unfinished application code, and features found in an APK teardown are not guaranteed to reach users.

Whether Tamba eventually becomes a standalone social app or simply contributes new features to YouTube, the discovery suggests Google is exploring ways to make its video platform more social.
