Chromebooks have gained immense popularity as lightweight and efficient devices for productivity and connectivity. While they excel in many areas, accessing network file shares may pose a challenge for some users. In this article, we will provide you with a comprehensive, step-by-step guide on how to connect Chromebook to network file share.

Step 1: Connect your Chromebook to the network

Before diving into the process, ensure that your Chromebook is connected to the same network as the file share you want to access. This step is crucial for establishing a secure and reliable connection.

Step 2: Accessing the file share

  1. Start by locating the “Files” icon on your Chromebook’s home screen.
  2. In the top right corner of the Files window, you will find a menu represented by three vertical dots (⋮). Click on this menu to unveil a drop-down list of options.
  3. From the drop-down list, hover your cursor over “Services” and then select “SMB File Share” from the expanded options. This selection will open the SMB File Share dialog box.

Step 3: Connecting to the network file share

  1. In the SMB File Share dialog box, you will have two options: selecting an available file share or manually entering the URL for the desired file share. Choose the option that suits your needs.
  2. Fill in the required information, including the URL of the file share, username, password, and any additional details that may be required for authentication purposes. Ensure the accuracy of the entered information to establish a successful connection. (See the screenshot below)
  3. Once you have entered all the required details, click on the “Add” button to confirm the addition of the network share. This action will initiate the connection process, and your Chromebook will attempt to connect to the network file share.
