Google has begun rolling out a subtle redesign of its login page, giving the familiar sign-in process a modern facelift. Users may start seeing a message that “a new look is coming soon” when accessing their Google accounts. What they’ll find is an updated look aligning with Google’s Material Design aesthetic.
While fundamentally unchanged functionality-wise, the refreshed design presents the sign-in steps horizontally across desktop and mobile. This allows the page to flex across varying screen sizes like the latest Pixel Fold or the Pixel Tablet. Visually it’s a touch sleeker, but still prompts for passwords, passkeys and other authentication methods as before.

For most, this change will lack the controversy of previous Google rollouts like shuttered products or Gmail redesigns. The updated login brings little in terms of new user-facing capabilities. As Google notes, both personal account holders and Workspace admins will be unable to control the gradual update. The rollout starts February 21, 2024, finishing by March 4. Only those on outdated browsers after that date may see the old page.
So while not radically different, the redesigned login represents Google’s continued efforts to modernize and streamline the user experience. Expect to see the familiar login flow with a fresh coat of Material Design paint over the coming weeks.
