In an era where AI chatbots draft emails, curate playlists, and even argue with customer service reps, Google is pushing automation further into everyday tasks. Its newest experiment, “Ask for Me,” aims to tackle a common chore: calling local businesses for basic info. Rolling out as part of Google Search Labs, the feature uses artificial intelligence to contact nail salons and auto shops on your behalf, asking about pricing, availability, or appointment slots. But while the tool promises convenience, it also raises questions about transparency, privacy, and how businesses might react to yet another AI caller.
How “Ask for Me” works
The feature, currently in limited testing, is designed to simplify the hunt for local services. Here’s the process:
- Enable the experiment: Users must first opt into “Ask for Me” via Google Search Labs (the company’s sandbox for testing new search features).
- Search for services: Look up a nail salon or auto shop on Google Search. If the business is enrolled, an “Ask for Me” prompt will appear.
- Answer questions: The AI will ask for specifics—like whether you need an oil change, tire rotation, or a manicure, your car model (for auto shops), or preferred appointment time.
- Share contact info: Provide an email or phone number to receive updates.
- Let AI take over: Google’s system calls the business, gathers details, and relays them back to you.

For now, the feature is limited to auto repair shops and nail salons in select regions, though Google hints at broader expansion if testing goes well.
