Google’s latest flagship phones, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro launched just a few months ago to much fanfare. With Google’s homegrown Tensor G3 chipset and advanced AI capabilities, these phones aimed to showcase the best of Android and Google’s software prowess. However, with 2024 underway and rivals like Samsung gearing up to announce their next-generation Galaxy S series, Google is slashing prices to keep its current flagships competitive.

The standard Pixel 8 and its pricier Pro sibling are currently matching their best-ever discounts across major retailers. The base 128GB Pixel 8 model is now available for $549 at Amazon, Best Buy and the Google Store itself — a sizable $150 off its usual $699 launch price. Meanwhile, the feature-packed Pixel 8 Pro with its telephoto camera, 120Hz display and enhanced AI functions is now $200 off at an attractive $799. Upgraded storage tiers are getting equivalent percentage discounts too.

These timely pre-emptive price cuts come right as rumors intensify of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S24 series announcement. With each generation, Samsung sets the benchmark for premium Android phones to beat. And while Google’s Pixel 8 models launched to critical acclaim last Fall, their custom Tensor G3 chipset still falls slightly behind rivals in raw performance. Software and AI capabilities compensate for this, but lower pricing helps sweeten the deal.

For many shoppers though, the standard $549 Pixel 8 may prove the smarter long-term purchase over its Pro sibling. While you lose out on the telephoto camera and other fringe features, the Pixel 8 delivers the same outstanding software experience and photography chops for hundreds less. With Google extending flagship-grade software support to at least Android 17/18 down the line, performance should also hold up well over years of use.
