At Google’s Made by Google event, the company pulled off a modest miracle for a category that’s long flirted with fragility — the Pixel 10 Pro Fold ships with a full IP68 water and dust rating. On paper, that means the hinge and all moving parts are sealed against the kind of microscopic grit that has plagued folding displays since the format began. That’s a practical win as much as a specs one: tiny particles are exactly what will wreck a foldable’s inner panel, so the jump from Samsung-style IP48 protections to a full 6 rating is a meaningful engineering milestone.

Google didn’t get there by accident. The company redesigned the hinge with what it calls a gear-less mechanism and bolstered the chassis where it counts. The move away from exposed gear-tooth systems and toward internalized, sealed internals — plus hinge brushes and tighter tolerances — is what lets Google confidently advertise dust-tighting on a moving, folding device. Those are small changes in the spec sheet that require big investments in tolerances, materials and testing; in short, it’s more mechanical engineering than marketing talk.

What else changed? Mostly the details you’d expect in a Pixel refresh: the foldable’s outer screen is a hair larger and the inner panel is brighter. The outer display grows to 6.4 inches (up from 6.3), and the inner, unfolded OLED panel peaks at about 3,000 nits — a bump that helps outdoors visibility and HDR highlights. The phone keeps a 120Hz refresh rate on both panels and, crucially for many buyers, arrives with Google’s current flagship silicon: the Tensor G5.

That Tensor G5 isn’t just a number on a spec sheet. Google leaned hard on the on-device AI angle for the whole Pixel 10 family and the foldable benefits from the same smarts. Features like Magic Cue — a contextual assistant that proactively surfaces relevant snippets from apps like Calendar or Gmail — and a call translator that can mimic a speaker’s voice are built to run locally, without you needing to upload everything to the cloud. If you care about privacy or downtime, running these helpers on the device is a clear selling point.

On the accessories front, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold adds Qi2 / Pixelsnap magnetic charging support, which finally gives Android a broadly compatible magnetic wireless standard similar to Apple’s MagSafe. Google showed a first-party magnetic ring that clings hard enough to let you dangle the phone by the ring — useful, gimmicky, and a little unnerving when you’re holding a nearly two-grand gadget by a loop. But it’s also a sign that Google sees the Fold as something you’ll use like a normal phone, with the same ecosystem of cases, chargers and stands.

If you’re looking for camera upgrades, temper expectations. The Fold’s imaging hardware hasn’t seen the same leap as Google’s slab-style Pro phones: sensors and lenses remain smaller than those on the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. Google still relies on software and on-device computational photography to squeeze the most out of the hardware, but if your main priority is the biggest possible sensor and low-light performance, the Fold isn’t the photography flagship of the bunch.

Price and availability are straightforward: the Pixel 10 Pro Fold starts at $1,799, with preorders opening the same day as the announcement and shipments set for October 9, 2025. That keeps the Fold competitive with last year’s entry price while adding dust and water protection that many buyers have been asking for. Google is also keeping the color palette subtle — think moonstone (a gray-ish tone) and jade (a muted greenish-yellow) rather than loud finishes.

Foldables have always been a compromise — novel form factor and large screen in a compact package, but with durability concerns baked in. By solving dust ingress at the hinge, Google addresses a long-standing Achilles’ heel of folding phones. That doesn’t make the format perfect — repairs, crease visibility and camera compromises remain — but it does make the Fold more practical for everyday life: poolside, sidewalk, or sandy shore. For people who wanted a foldable without the constant worry of grit, this is the first device that really tries to remove that worry.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold isn’t a revolution in concept — it’s an evolution in survivability. Google kept the price roughly the same, added real-world durability, polished displays and smuggled in its latest AI tricks. If you were waiting for a folding phone you could use without treating it like fragile lab equipment, this one will finally let you get a little sand between your toes.
