Forza Horizon fans, brace yourselves for some bittersweet news. Turn 10 Studios, the developer behind the popular racing game series has announced the impending shutdown of the online servers for Forza Horizon 1 and 2. Starting on August 22, 2023, players will bid farewell to the online functionalities that have enriched their gameplay experiences, including matchmaking, leaderboards, and the ability to browse and download user-generated content.

Sadly, this means that features like customized liveries, vibrant vinyl designs, finely-tuned setups, and awe-inspiring in-game photographs will no longer be accessible in these beloved titles. However, the silver lining amidst this cloud of disappointment is that the single-player campaigns of both games will remain fully functional, allowing players to continue their adventures on the open roads of the Horizon festival.

The decision to shut down the online servers stems from the dwindling player population in these older titles. With the passage of time, the community has naturally migrated towards newer entries in the series, resulting in a significantly reduced active player base. Moreover, the age of these games and their corresponding online services make it increasingly challenging to sustain and provide reliable access to the online features, even before the designated shutdown date.

Forza Horizon 2 players, both on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, will be affected by this server closure. Additionally, the standalone version of Forza Horizon 2 Presents Fast & Furious will also be impacted. However, it is worth mentioning that players who have already purchased Forza Horizon 1 or Forza Horizon 2 will still be able to download and enjoy their copies of the game, even after the closure date. Turn 10 Studios aims to ensure that those who have invested in these titles can continue to experience the thrilling races and immersive environments that have captivated fans for years.

Notably, both Forza Horizon 1 and 2 are backward compatible on Xbox Series X and Series S, and players utilizing these newer consoles need not fret. The server closure will have no effect on the backward compatibility functionality, meaning that they can still relish the single-player content on the latest gaming hardware.

As the Forza Horizon community prepares to bid farewell to these two cherished titles’ online features, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the lasting impact they have had. Forza Horizon 1, released in 2012, introduced players to the festival atmosphere and the breathtaking landscapes of Colorado. Its sequel, Forza Horizon 2, set in Southern Europe, expanded upon this foundation with an enhanced open-world experience, further solidifying the franchise’s reputation for delivering exhilarating racing adventures.

While the closure of the online servers may mark the end of a chapter in the Forza Horizon series, it is important to remember that this decision allows developers to allocate resources towards the continuous improvement and maintenance of newer iterations, ensuring a vibrant and engaging experience for the evolving community of players.

So, rev up your engines and make the most of the remaining time with Forza Horizon 1 and 2‘s online features. Relive the thrilling races, engage with fellow petrolheads, and bid farewell to an era that has left an indelible mark on the world of virtual racing.
