If you’ve ever come back to a mug of coffee only to find it gone tepid while your inbox ate your attention, the Ember Temperature Control Smart Mug 2 promises to end that little tragedy. Right now, Best Buy is clearing the 14-ounce Ember Mug 2 to $99.99 (regularly $149.99), which turns what’s usually a luxury splurge into a genuinely tempting buy for people who take their hot drinks seriously.

The Ember Mug 2 is an electrically heated ceramic mug with a built-in battery and a charging coaster. You set an exact drinking temperature (between 120°F and 145°F), either on the mug itself or from the Ember smartphone app; the mug then keeps your drink at that temperature for as long as you want—about 80 minutes on the 14-oz model on battery, or indefinitely while it sits on the included charging coaster. That combination of hardware and app is Ember’s whole pitch: perfect, repeatable sips from first to last.

Coffee lovers can now grab the Ember Smart Mug 2 for $99.99, a rare $50 discount that brings luxury temperature control into everyday use.

$100 at Best Buy

Why people like it (and the real tradeoffs)

The appeal is simple and tactile. On the plus side:

  • Precision — being able to pick a number (130°F vs 140°F) matters more than it sounds for people who care about scalded tongues or tea that’s too cool. The app saves presets and also has tea-steeping timers and a few personalization options (like the mug’s LED color).
  • Design and taste — Ember uses a ceramic coating designed to preserve the taste, and reviewers and food-writers often note it doesn’t “taste electric.”.
  • Practical life — the 14-oz size is a nice middle ground: not tiny, but not the bulky travel-mug footprint. The included coaster means desktop all-day use is feasible.

But there are tradeoffs to be honest about:

  • Battery life — the mug will keep a 14-oz drink hot for roughly 80 minutes off the coaster. If you’re a serial, all-day slow sipper and you leave the mug away from the charging coaster, the battery will eventually run out. Ember makes this clear on its specs.
  • Price — at full retail, it’s a splurge (around $150 for the 14-oz model). That’s why the Best Buy clearance to $99.99 is notable: a $50 discount makes the cost easier to justify.
  • Cleaning — Ember is hand-wash safe and rated IPX7 for submersion (so rinsing is fine), but it’s not dishwasher safe—one more chore to factor in if you’re used to throwing mugs in the dishwasher.

Who should (and shouldn’t) buy it

Buy this if:

  • You work at a desk and regularly lose hours to meetings or deep work while your drink cools.
  • You enjoy small creature comforts and value repeatable, easy customization.
  • You’re buying a thoughtful gift for a remote worker, coffee obsessive, or tea-lover.

Skip this if:

  • You want something maintenance-free and dishwasher-friendly.
  • You rarely sit for more than an hour with a drink—or you prefer insulated thermoses that don’t need charging.
  • You’re extremely price-sensitive and would rather buy a cheaper warmer or insulated mug.

Is $99.99 worth it?

If you already think a warm mug is a small but meaningful quality-of-life upgrade, yes: $99.99 makes Ember’s combination of hardware, app control, and design a much more palatable purchase than full retail. If you’re still undecided, weigh how often you actually return to cold coffee and whether you’ll keep the mug on its charger through the day—those behaviors determine whether Ember’s features will pay off. Reviews from reputable outlets consistently praise Ember’s precision and build, which helps justify the buy at a discounted price.
