To celebrate Dragon Quest Day—marking the original release of Dragon Quest on May 27, 1986—Square Enix revealed that Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will arrive on October 30, 2025. The double-feature revival will span every major platform: PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC (Steam and Microsoft Store), Nintendo Switch, and the brand-new Switch 2.

Fans who fell in love with the trilogy’s recent renaissance will be pleased to hear that the same talented team behind last year’s Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is at the helm. That third-entry revival married the series’ time-tested turn-based combat with an exquisite blend of pixel art and modern lighting, earning praise for both its fidelity to the source material and its smart quality-of-life tweaks. Now, the narrative arc continues: with Dragon Quest I and II, players will step into the shoes of Erdrick’s descendants, completing the saga that began nearly four decades ago.

Square Enix promises that both remakes will sport beautiful HD-2D graphics, a refined battle system, numerous quality-of-life updates, and major story additions, plus a variety of new content whose specifics will be unveiled in the coming months. Early details hint at expanded side-quests, fresh boss encounters, and revamped menus that streamline inventory management and world navigation. In essence, these aren’t mere visual upgrades—they’re a comprehensive rethinking of how to experience the foundational adventures of the Dragon Quest universe.

For those eager to own every slice of the HD-2D Erdrick saga, Square Enix is also launching the Dragon Quest HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy Collection—a digital-only bundle featuring all three remakes for $99.99. It’s a tempting package for newcomers and veteran slayers alike.

Collectors need not despair: alongside the digital editions, a premium Collector’s Edition of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is available to pre-order. Priced at $149.99, it includes:

  • A physical copy of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake
  • A “Character & Monster Blocks Complete Set” featuring six heroes, a faithful canine companion, two fearsome bosses, and a commemorative logo
  • The “Outstanding Outfit Kit” (in-game items: Ring of Strength, Slime Earrings, Mad Cap, and Arriviste’s Vest)
  • Two exclusive digital wallpapers
  • A special pre-order bonus

Why launch with Dragon Quest III first, then circle back? It all comes down to the series’ timeline. Although Dragon Quest I and II were released in ’86 and ’87, their stories occur after the events of III. By releasing the third game’s remake first, Square Enix honored the narrative chronology: players now experience the origin tale before diving into the legacies left by its hero.

This pair of remakes represents more than nostalgia—it’s the culmination of a 38-year journey from blocky NES beginnings to today’s sophisticated pixel-and-parallax artistry. As we count down to October 30th, fans can look forward to a slate of deep-dive developer interviews, gameplay trailers, and perhaps even surprise reveals about the as-yet-undisclosed “new content.” For those who’ve ever dreamed of reliving Slime-stacked dungeons with a modern sheen, the wait is almost over.

Stay tuned: come October, the kingdom of Alefgard will sparkle in HD-2D—and so, too, will our memories of why we fell in love with Dragon Quest in the first place.
