Discord has finally announced that it is testing themes for its user interface, providing users with the opportunity to select from 16 premade color schemes. Although this feature has been long-awaited by the app’s users, it comes with a catch: users must pay for its Nitro subscription, which costs $9.99 per month, to access themes. Unfortunately, themes are not included in the $2.99 monthly Nitro Basic plan, according to Discord’s feature comparison chart.

Nitro offers various helpful features for Discord users, such as the ability to upload larger files, send longer messages, and customize their profiles. However, one can argue that aesthetic changes can also have a significant impact on the user experience. Therefore, it’s understandable for some users to want to access themes without having to pay such a high price for a casual app.

To check out the available themes and to see what Discord could look like if one were to subscribe to Nitro, Discord has made it possible to preview the themes. Users can go to Settings > Appearance and then click on the “Preview Theme” button. The themes include a range of pastel-colored light themes, as well as cool and moody dark themes.

For users who don’t want to pay for Nitro, the BetterDiscord project has been working to enhance the app for a while, including the introduction of a theming engine. This allows users to create custom themes rather than selecting premade ones, but it’s admittedly not as user-friendly as the Nitro version.
