The days of forgotten passwords and endless reset links may soon be behind us. A new report from password manager Dashlane indicates a significant surge in the adoption of passkeys, the cryptographic keys that promise to revolutionize online security.

Since the beginning of 2024, Dashlane has witnessed a staggering 400% increase in passkey authentications. This means that one in five active Dashlane users is now leveraging these advanced security measures. While this represents a positive step forward, it’s essential to note that we’re still in the early stages of a widespread shift away from traditional passwords.

Unsurprisingly, e-commerce platforms have been quick to embrace passkeys. Giants like eBay, Amazon, and Target are among the top adopters, accounting for a substantial 42% of all passkey authentications. This trend is likely driven by the growing consumer demand for secure online shopping experiences.

However, it’s not just the big-name retailers driving this change. Surprisingly, gaming platforms like Roblox are outpacing even social media behemoths like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) in passkey adoption. This indicates a broader acceptance of the technology across various digital platforms.

Dashlane’s data also reveals that passkeys are significantly enhancing the user experience. Successful logins have increased by a remarkable 70% compared to traditional password methods. This is a testament to the convenience and security benefits offered by passkeys.

The FIDO Alliance, the organization behind the development of passkeys, has also reported a positive trend. Consumers are abandoning purchases and login attempts due to password-related issues less frequently. While this is encouraging, it’s important to remember that password-related frustrations still occur nearly four times per month on average.

While the progress made in passkey adoption is undoubtedly exciting, it’s crucial to maintain realistic expectations. The transition to a passwordless future will take time. Although companies like Google have reported billions of passkey uses, the widespread adoption necessary to completely replace passwords is still some way off.

Nevertheless, the growing momentum behind passkeys is a clear indication that we are moving in the right direction. As more platforms and users embrace this technology, we can expect to see a substantial improvement in online security and user experience.
