Comcast's 10G Network delivers 2 Gbps via old cables

Comcast, a leading provider of residential cable internet services, is set to revolutionize your internet experience. They are gearing up to roll out a groundbreaking upgrade, offering both upload and download speeds of a staggering 2 Gbps. What makes this even more impressive is that this remarkable feat is achieved using aging coaxial cables that have been in use for decades.

In a bold move, Comcast proudly claims to be the world’s first internet service provider (ISP) to deliver multi-gigabit symmetrical speeds to its customers through cutting-edge DOCSIS 4.0 technology. This technology is made possible thanks to the powerful Xfinity 10G network, a testament to Comcast’s dedication to staying at the forefront of the industry.

The X-Class Internet service is all set to make its debut, starting with select neighborhoods in Colorado Springs, Colorado, within the coming week. The lightning-fast service will soon be making its way to parts of Atlanta and Philadelphia, with plans to expand to other markets in the years ahead.

Comcast reveals that DOCSIS 4.0 connections are already available in millions of homes across the United States. While cable-based multi-gigabit download speeds have been a possibility for some time, the shift to DOCSIS 4.0 isn’t just about boosting download speeds; it’s about delivering upload speeds that match, while also reducing lag and ensuring that downstream services remain unaffected.

This milestone is the result of years of dedicated work by Comcast, and their ambitions extend far beyond just a few neighborhoods. By the end of 2025, they aim to bring 2 Gbps symmetrical service to more than 50 million homes. The best part? Many consumers won’t need to wait for costly fiber network installations, as these remarkable speeds will be accessible via the existing coaxial cable infrastructure.

What’s even more exciting is the potential for even faster internet connections in the future. DOCSIS 4.0 has the capacity to support download speeds of up to 10 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 6 Gbps. In a test conducted last year, Comcast achieved incredible download speeds of 6 Gbps and upload speeds of 4 Gbps.
