ASUS has unleashed its latest ROG Strix Scar 16 and 18 gaming laptops for 2025, and they’re nothing short of spectacular, especially if you’re into RGB lighting. After a tantalizing teaser last month, these machines have finally hit the scene, and they come with an LED light show that’s hard to ignore.

First off, the design. Both the ROG Strix Scar 16 and 18 feature a customizable dot-matrix display on the lid, reminiscent of the AniMe Vision seen on ASUS’s gaming phones. This isn’t just about looks; it’s interactive. You can program it to display animations or even sync with other AniMe Vision devices for a personalized touch. Around the base, there’s a full wraparound of RGB lights, turning your gaming setup into a mini rave, if that’s your style.

But let’s talk under the hood where the real power lies. These beasts can be equipped with the latest Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor alongside the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 GPU – specs that promise to handle even the most demanding games with ease. Memory options soar up to 64GB of DDR5-5600 RAM, and storage can hit 2TB via PCIe Gen4 SSD, ensuring lightning-fast load times and multitasking capabilities.

The display is another highlight. The ROG Nebula HDR screen is a 16:10 aspect ratio 2.5K Mini LED panel, boasting a peak brightness of 1,200 nits and a 240Hz refresh rate. This means not only do you get vibrant colors and deep blacks, but also incredibly smooth gameplay, which is crucial in fast-paced games where every frame counts.

Connectivity is up to date with two Thunderbolt 5 ports, which are great for high-speed data transfer or connecting to multiple high-resolution displays. Plus, the design facilitates easy access to the internals for upgrades, which is a nod to longevity in a market where tech can quickly become outdated.

Cooling is critical for such high-performance machines, and ASUS hasn’t skimped here. They’ve integrated an end-to-end vapor chamber with a sandwiched heatsink system, alongside using Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on both the GPU and CPU. This setup is claimed to keep noise levels down to a whisper-quiet 45dB, even during marathon gaming sessions, which is impressive for machines this powerful.

The price tags start at $2,599, positioning these laptops squarely in the premium segment of the market. They’re set to start shipping in February, so if you’re considering investing in top-tier gaming hardware, you might want to keep an eye out for when they hit the shelves.

For gamers, these laptops represent a blend of top-tier performance with a design that’s as much about flair as it is about function. Whether the RGB and animated lid are your cup of tea or not, the specs alone make the ROG Strix Scar 16 and 18 compelling prospects for anyone serious about gaming on the go or at a desk.
