According to a report by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Netflix does not currently plan to launch a dedicated app for the Vision Pro. The streaming giant also has no intention of making its iPad app compatible with Apple’s headset platform.
This means Vision Pro users will have no way to watch Netflix content in a native app environment. Instead, they will be relegated to viewing movies and shows through a web browser – a far less immersive experience that precludes offline viewing and could impose limitations on video resolution.
By contrast, other major streaming services like Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Paramount+ have all announced Vision Pro app support. Apple also touted built-in 3D movie and show options from its own Apple TV+ service as well as Disney+. But no such functionality for Netflix subscribers was mentioned.
When asked by Bloomberg about the lack of a Vision Pro app, a Netflix spokesperson said members would “be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs.” However, according to Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber, Netflix did have a functioning iPad app already optimized and available for testing on Vision Pro headsets until recently.
The Netflix snub casts doubt on how compelling the Vision Pro will be as an all-in-one streaming device. With its $3,499 price tag, Apple is marketing its advanced headset as more than just a gaming peripheral. But no access to one of the world’s most popular streaming services could make the Vision Pro a much harder sell for mainstream consumers looking to watch TV shows and movies in VR.
