Apple appears to be on the verge of introducing a game-changing addition to its smart home lineup: a wall-mounted, AI-enabled smart display. Rumored to debut in March 2025, this sleek device codenamed J490, is expected to offer users a versatile hub for managing HomeKit devices, attending video calls, and much more—all wrapped in an Apple-driven approach to smart home control.

According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, the display will be around six inches and have a tablet-like build with thick bezels. It will run a specialized OS resembling a blend of watchOS and StandBy mode, showcasing Apple’s aim for an easy, family-friendly interface that doesn’t overwhelm with complex features. Notably, the device will support Apple Intelligence, Apple’s latest AI platform designed to integrate more deeply with users’ daily lives. It can use voice controls, proximity sensors, and even support Handoff, so users can seamlessly continue tasks on different Apple devices. This setup emphasizes Apple’s vision for smart home integration that is natural and intuitive, aligning with its design-first philosophy.

As for functionality, the device is likely to include support for HomeKit-compatible products, such as smart lights, cameras, and thermostats, and will reportedly have a camera, battery, and speakers, making it adaptable to different parts of the home. Interestingly, Apple might also be developing a premium model with a robotic arm that adjusts the screen angle for hands-free use—a first for a product in this category and a feature aimed at convenience in a smart home setting. In terms of aesthetics, it’s expected to come in silver and black options.

The new smart display could compete directly with Amazon’s Echo Hub and Google’s Nest Hub but with an emphasis on Apple’s integrated ecosystem, leveraging Siri, iCloud, and the iPhone for setup. This release would come as part of Apple’s broader push into the smart home space, potentially setting the stage for more devices like a HomeKit-compatible camera, which analysts speculate could arrive by 2026.
