Apple is officially winding down Rosetta, the compatibility technology that has quietly helped Intel-based Mac apps keep working on Apple silicon for the past six years. With macOS 27 arriving this fall, Intel-only apps will no longer run on Apple silicon Macs, although Apple is making a notable exception for certain older, unmaintained games.
When Apple introduced its first M1-powered Macs in late 2020, the company had a potentially messy problem to solve. Macs had spent roughly 15 years running on Intel processors, and the existing software ecosystem was built around Intel’s x86 architecture. Apple silicon used a fundamentally different architecture, meaning older Mac apps could not simply run natively on the new machines.
Rosetta 2 was Apple’s practical answer. It translated Intel code so apps designed for older Macs could still open and operate on M-series machines, often with performance good enough that many users barely noticed the transition happening in the background. It gave developers time to rebuild their software for Apple silicon, while letting customers buy a new Mac without immediately abandoning the apps they already relied on.
That transition period is now nearing its end.
Apple said macOS 26.4 and later will begin showing users a system notification when they open apps that still depend on Rosetta. The message is essentially a warning shot: the app should be updated to an Apple silicon-native version before the next major macOS release. When macOS 27 ships this fall, it will be the final version of macOS to include Rosetta support for standard Intel-only Mac apps.
For most Mac owners, this will not be a dramatic change overnight. Major software developers moved to Apple silicon years ago, and the vast majority of commonly used apps – including browsers, office suites, creative tools, communications apps, and professional software – already offer native versions. In many cases, users may have installed a universal version of an app without ever realizing it contains code for both Intel and Apple silicon Macs.
Still, Rosetta’s retirement matters because it closes the door on a long tail of older software. That could include abandoned utilities, niche business applications, legacy plug-ins, older creative tools, and hobbyist projects that never received an Apple silicon update. A program that has continued to work on a MacBook Air with an M1, M2, M3, or newer chip may suddenly reach the end of its usable life after a future macOS upgrade.
Apple is urging developers that have not yet made the jump to create and distribute universal binaries, which include native support for both Intel and Apple silicon systems. Developers that already have Apple silicon-native apps are being asked to contact customers and encourage them to download the current version before macOS 27 arrives.
The company’s wording is especially important for users who think they have an updated app simply because it still launches. An Intel app running through Rosetta is functional, but it is not truly updated for modern Macs. Once macOS 27 becomes the last release with Rosetta, that distinction stops being a technical footnote and becomes a compatibility deadline.
There is one welcome exception. Apple says Rosetta functionality will remain available for older, unmaintained gaming titles that depend on Intel-based frameworks. That carve-out recognizes a reality Apple has occasionally struggled with: games have unusually long lives, and older Mac titles are often tied to discontinued engines, obsolete middleware, or publishers that have little financial reason to revisit a decade-old release.
For players, it is not a blanket promise that every old Intel Mac game will work forever. Apple’s statement is narrowly focused on older, unmaintained titles relying on Intel frameworks. But it does suggest the company understands that preserving access to legacy games is different from indefinitely supporting every outdated business app or utility.
Rosetta’s sunset also underlines just how complete Apple’s processor transition has become. The first M1 Macs were introduced as a bold bet: Apple was moving its entire personal-computer lineup away from Intel and toward chips designed in-house. Six years later, Apple silicon is no longer a new platform requiring special accommodation. It is the Mac platform.
That does not make the change painless for everyone. Users with an essential but aging app should not wait for macOS 27 to find out whether it has an Apple silicon version. The simplest check is to open the app’s official website or contact its developer. If no native update exists, users may need to stay on an earlier macOS release, find a replacement, move the task to another machine, or preserve an older Intel Mac for that specific software.
For organizations, the issue may be less visible but more consequential. Small businesses, schools, research labs, and creative teams often depend on specialized software that is too obscure to appear in ordinary compatibility lists. IT teams should identify Intel-only apps now, test native replacements, and warn users before a macOS upgrade turns an overlooked legacy program into a workflow problem.
Rosetta was never meant to be permanent. Apple introduced it as a bridge, and bridges eventually reach the other side. With macOS 27, the company is making clear that the Apple silicon transition is no longer in progress – it is complete. For modern Mac software, little will change. For the remaining Intel-only holdouts, though, the clock is now very much ticking.
