Apple is on a mission to clean up the chaotic web. The company has introduced a new feature called “Distraction Control” in its Safari browser, designed to banish those pesky pop-ups, intrusive ads, and other digital debris that can turn a simple browsing session into a frustrating ordeal.
Imagine cruising the internet without being bombarded by cookie consent banners, sign-up prompts, or auto-playing videos. This is the vision behind Distraction Control, which is currently available for testing in the latest developer betas of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.
How does it work? It’s surprisingly simple. Users can select specific elements on a webpage and with a magical animation, they vanish from view. It’s like having a personal assistant who can swiftly clear away clutter at the tap of a finger.
However, this isn’t a magic wand that can eliminate all ads forever. Apple acknowledges that Distraction Control won’t permanently banish frequently updated content like ads. Additionally, the changes made to a webpage using this feature are specific to the device you’re using and won’t sync across your Apple ecosystem.
While Distraction Control is still under development, it offers a glimpse into a future where users have more control over their online experience.
