Apple is introducing a refined design for its Photos app in the forthcoming iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. The update, which is currently in beta testing, prioritizes a more intuitive user experience and improved accessibility of high-quality images.
A key change involves the elimination of the carousel interface. Previously, users could swipe horizontally to navigate between various photo collections. However, Apple has determined that this feature added unnecessary complexity and opted to streamline the app by removing it.
To enhance usability, the Photos grid now occupies a larger portion of the screen, providing a clearer overview of image content. Additionally, albums are positioned higher within the app’s hierarchy, reducing the need for extensive scrolling.
The “Recently Saved” feature has also been integrated into the “Recent Days” collection, simplifying organization.
While the fundamental structure of the Photos app remains intact, these design adjustments aim to create a more efficient and enjoyable user experience. The app now defaults to a grid view, offering direct access to editing, sharing, and deletion tools. A dedicated search function facilitates quick image retrieval, and collections are readily available through vertical scrolling.
Apple has pre-populated the app with a range of default collections, including Recent Days, People and Pets, Trips, Memories, Albums, Featured Photos, and Wallpaper suggestions. Users also have the flexibility to create custom collections based on their preferences.
The ability to personalize the app further extends to the management of collections. Users can remove or rearrange collections to align with their specific needs.
The updated Photos app is currently accessible in the fifth developer beta versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. It is anticipated that these changes will be incorporated into future public beta releases.
