Apple, known for its fiercely independent approach to technology development, is reportedly seeking partnerships with its biggest rivals in the race to integrate cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) into its devices. According to The Wall Street Journal report, Apple has held talks with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, about incorporating Meta’s generative AI model into its recently unveiled “Apple Intelligence” platform.
This reported outreach to Meta comes on the heels of Apple’s official announcement at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) earlier this month. At the event, Apple confirmed a partnership with OpenAI, the research lab behind the powerful generative AI tool ChatGPT. This partnership will see ChatGPT integrated into upcoming Apple devices running the next generation of the company’s operating system.
The discussions with Meta suggest Apple might be looking beyond a single partner for its AI ambitions. The Wall Street Journal report mentions similar talks with AI startups Anthropic and Perplexity, although none of these discussions have materialized into concrete partnerships as of yet.
This newfound openness to collaboration seems like a strategic shift for Apple. Traditionally, the company has prided itself on developing its core technologies in-house. However, the rapid advancements in the field of AI appear to be prompting Apple to explore external options.
Apple’s senior VP of software engineering, Craig Federighi, hinted at this shift in strategy during his WWDC presentation. While announcing the partnership with OpenAI, Federighi mentioned the possibility of integrating Google‘s rival AI model, Gemini, into Apple Intelligence in the future. “We want to enable users ultimately to choose the models they want,” Federighi stated, suggesting Apple might be looking to create a platform that allows users to choose between various AI tools depending on their needs.
For now, Apple’s confirmed partnership is with OpenAI only. OpenAI’s GPT-4o model will be integrated into Apple Intelligence to enhance Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, and other Apple tools. Some features powered by this AI integration are expected to roll out later this year.

It remains to be seen if Apple will finalize its discussions with Meta or other potential partners. However, these reported talks signal a significant change in Apple’s approach to AI development. By embracing collaboration, Apple might be aiming to accelerate its progress in this rapidly evolving field and offer its users a wider range of AI-powered features and functionalities.
