In the age of smart technology, convenience often comes at a cost. One such instance is the increasing use of Bluetooth beacons, small, often inconspicuous devices designed to track items. While they’re invaluable for finding lost keys or luggage, they’ve also become a tool for the sinister.

Imagine this: a stranger, or worse, someone you know, slipping a tiny tracking device into your bag or car. This isn’t a plot from a spy thriller; it’s a growing reality. These beacons, similar to Apple’s AirTags, can silently monitor your every move, turning your life into a surveillance state.

But fear not. While the potential for misuse is alarming, technology is also offering solutions. Both Apple and Google have integrated features into their operating systems to detect these unwanted trackers.

How it works?

These tiny devices use Bluetooth signals to communicate with your smartphone. When a beacon is detected moving with you over a period, your phone sends you an alert. This could indicate that someone is tracking you without your consent.

How to detect hidden trackers

  • iPhone users:
    • Update to the latest iOS version.
    • Look for notifications about items detected near you.
    • Use the Find My app to see a history of detected items.
    • If you locate the tag, disable it through the app or by removing the battery.
  • Android users:
    • Ensure you’re running the latest Android version.
    • Be on the lookout for unknown tracker alerts.
    • Use the built-in scan feature or the Tracker Detect app to manually check for trackers.

If you discover a tracker, document its details, including the serial number if possible. Consider reporting the incident to local authorities.

Prevention is key

  • Regularly check your belongings for unusual objects.
  • Be cautious about accepting gifts or items from strangers.
  • Keep your smartphone’s software updated.
  • Utilize the tracking detection features offered by your phone.

While the prospect of being tracked can be unsettling, it’s essential to stay informed and proactive. By understanding how these devices work and taking advantage of the available protections, you can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim. Remember, your privacy is a fundamental right, and it’s up to you to safeguard it.
