Apple‘s most premium iPhone model, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, made waves last fall with its groundbreaking camera system featuring a state-of-the-art Tetraprism telephoto lens. This novel lens design enables the Pro Max to achieve an impressive 5x optical zoom range, allowing users to get much closer to their subjects without any loss in image quality.
Now, according to the latest industry insights, it appears this powerful zooming capability will no longer be exclusive to the Max model. Leading market research firm TrendForce suggests the Tetraprism lens will likely also feature in the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro, slated for release this fall.
After witnessing the rave reviews and demand sparked by the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s boosted optics, TrendForce analysts predict more smartphone makers will follow Apple’s lead in adopting periscopic lenses and folding lens designs to push the boundaries of mobile photography. For Apple specifically, they expect the key Tetraprism component will be incorporated across the full iPhone 16 Pro series.
This expansion for the 16 Pro would align with longtime Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo‘s long-standing predictions. Since September, Kuo has consistently claimed both of next year’s Pro models will inherit the Max’s long-reaching Tetraprism system. Further reports from the supply chain seem to reinforce these rumors.
By democratizing this elite zoom performance outside of just the Max, Apple could lure even more creators, professionals, and photography enthusiasts to upgrade to the iPhone 16 Pro and experience its optical excellence. In contrast, Android rivals will likely reserve comparable complex lens innovations only for certain ultra-premium flagships, to avoid raising prices across all models.
With the legendary iPhone camera experience continuing to elevation year-over-year, it seems the 16 Pro may soon gain another compelling advantage. For those craving best-in-class zoom for landscapes, portraits, sports, and more, next year’s advanced optics could prove well worth the wait.
