The next generation of iPhones is just around the corner, and if the latest rumors are to be believed, Apple‘s upcoming iPhone 16 lineup will bring a mix of battery upgrades and downgrades. According to a Chinese leaker known as OvO Baby Sauce OvO, three of the four models – the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max – will feature larger battery capacities compared to their predecessors. However, the leak suggests that the iPhone 16 Plus will buck this trend, allegedly sporting a smaller battery than the outgoing iPhone 15 Plus.
This particular detail aligns with a previous leak from the similarly obscure source “Majin Bu” on X/Twitter, though OvO Baby Sauce OvO has added purported battery capacity figures for the iPhone 16 Pro, a detail that Majin Bu omitted. As such, this latest leak provides the first alleged glimpse at battery capacity changes across Apple’s entire 2024 iPhone lineup.
| iPhone 15 Lineup (2023) | iPhone 16 Lineup (2024) | % Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard model | 3,349 mAh | 3,561 mAh | +6% |
| Plus model | 4,383 mAh | 4,006 mAh | -9% |
| Pro model | 3,274 mAh | 3,355 mAh | +2.5 |
| Pro Max model | 4,422 mAh | 4,676 mAh | +5% |
The reasons behind Apple’s supposed decision to reduce the battery size of the iPhone 16 Plus remain unclear. On paper, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to be identical in terms of features, with only their display sizes separating the two models. It’s possible that any capacity reduction could be offset by efficiency improvements elsewhere, mitigating the impact on battery life. Another theory posits that Apple may be intentionally creating a more significant gulf between the iPhone 16 Plus and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, potentially nudging customers toward the higher-end, more expensive model with its premium features.
This strategic move would mark a departure from Apple’s approach with the iPhone 14 Plus, which offered customers a 6.7-inch display – the same size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max – without the premium price tag. In fact, the iPhone 14 Plus boasted a larger battery capacity than the Pro Max model, allowing Apple to market it as having “our longest battery life.”
However, with the introduction of the iPhone 15 series, Apple gave the iPhone 15 Pro Max the largest battery ever used in an iPhone, clawing back the battery life advantage held by the non-Pro model.
If the latest rumors prove accurate, the gap between the iPhone 16 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 Plus could widen even further. Whispers suggest that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will offer a staggering 30-hour-plus battery life, outpacing the already impressive 29-hour battery life of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Adding to the allure of the Pro models, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to sport slightly larger displays compared to their predecessors.
