Ever frantically swipe through your iPhone photos, stomach dropping because that hilarious cat picture you swear you had is nowhere to be found? Well, fret no more, my fellow memory hoarders! Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 update might be your saving grace, digging up lost or messed-up photos from the depths of your phone’s memory.
Folks at 9to5Mac say iOS 18 (and the iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia too) will have a brand new “Recovered” album chilling in your Photos app. This album will be like a lost and found for forgotten photos and videos that your phone magically pulls out of thin air.
When you update, your phone basically becomes a photo detective, scanning for any hidden pics and videos. If it finds anything interesting, the Recovered album pops up like a surprise party in the Utilities section of your Photos app.
Now, don’t get this confused with the “Recently Deleted” album you already know. That’s more like a photo purgatory, giving your deleted pics a 30-day vacation before they’re gone for good. The Recovered album seems to be for photos that got lost in some other digital drama, maybe even a glitch.
This new feature comes after a bit of a photo snafu in iOS 17.5. Some users were spooked by photos reappearing after they swore they deleted them. Apple fessed up to a “rare issue” where messed-up photo files caused some ghostly comebacks.
Thankfully, those phantom photo scares seem to be a thing of the past. With iOS 18, Apple is being more proactive, giving lost photos a fighting chance with a special recovery spot.
The good news keeps rolling! Apple just released public betas for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, so techy folks can tinker with these new features early.
