Apple customers hoping for a HomePod smart speaker with a built-in screen will likely have to wait a few more years, according to a new report from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said Apple has begun early development work on a HomePod with an “iPad-like display” by partnering with overseas suppliers. However, Gurman cautioned that Apple has not yet made enough progress for a launch to be imminent.
Sources say the new HomePod with screen is currently slated for release in 2025 at the earliest, though plans could change depending on the pace of development.
The rumored product would represent Apple’s first foray into the smart display category, which is currently dominated by Google‘s Nest Hub and Amazon‘s Echo Show devices. It would likely allow users to access information, control smart home devices, make calls, and more through hand gestures and voice commands.
Apple revived the full-sized HomePod last year after discontinuing it in 2021. The company also continues to sell the lower-cost HomePod mini, first released in 2020, though neither product has a display.
Beyond the HomePod with screen, Gurman says Apple has explored other smart home concepts including a device that combines an Apple TV, HomePod speaker, and FaceTime camera. But the company has been “indecisive” on its smart home roadmap for years, Gurman reports.
While tech enthusiasts may be eager for new Apple-made smart home gadgets, they will seemingly need to hold on just a little longer. With any luck, Apple’s Dream HomePod could arrive by the middle of this decade.
