Apple is bending towards a foldable future for its flagship devices, according to a new report from The Information. The tech giant is said to be developing at least two prototype iPhones that fold horizontally like a clamshell, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip smartphones.
Engineers have reportedly struggled with the durability of a foldable iPhone design, wanting to maintain the sleek thinness of current models while incorporating the extra components needed for a foldable display. Apple has consulted with manufacturers in Asia about supplying parts for foldable iPhones in different sizes, though a launch is unlikely in the next couple of years.
On the tablet side, Apple is also pressing forward on longstanding rumors of a foldable iPad, with engineers working on prototypes around 8 inches in size – similar to an iPad Mini. Key focuses there are minimizing the crease on the folding display and creating a sturdy hinge that allows the screen to lie completely flat.
So while we just saw the debut of the high-powered Vision Pro smart glasses, Apple still has big plans to take iPhone and iPad hardware into new folding form factors in the coming years. The company is playing catchup to Samsung and others who have already brought foldable devices to market but hopes to crack the code on combining folding displays with their signature slim and sleek industrial design.
Whether and when these bendy iPhones and iPads will hit shelves remains uncertain. But for now, Apple’s foldable future is unfolding one innovation at a time behind the scenes in Cupertino.
