Apple has built a reputation for being on the cutting edge of mobile technology, though they often aren’t the first to unveil new innovations. However, if recent leaks hold any truth, Apple may finally be ready to enter the growing foldable device market – but with an iPad first rather than an iPhone.
According to noted Apple analyst Mark Gurman, Apple’s first foldable product will likely be an iPad, not an iPhone. Gurman claims issues around durability and display creasing remain barriers for a folding iPhone to meet Apple’s high standards. However, these concerns may be less pressing for a foldable iPad debut.
This reporting aligns with several supply chain leaks over the past year suggesting a foldable iPad would precede a foldable iPhone. One source indicated late 2024 or early 2025 for a folding iPad launch. Another pointed to September 2026 for the long-rumored foldable iPhone.
The reasoning behind leading with an iPad makes sense given Apple’s penchant for perfection. Tablets aren’t subjected to the same daily wear-and-tear as smartphones. Apple may use a foldable iPad to test the waters before diving all the way in with a foldable iPhone – their flagship mobile product sitting at the core of their business.
Of course, nothing is certain, as product launches this far out remain fluid. But after years of rumors without results, Apple now appears to be inching closer to taking the plunge into foldable devices. And based on the latest leaks, expect the iPad to test those foldable waters before the iPhone.
So for those waiting to fold their iPhones in half, more patience may still be required. But a foldable future for Apple finally looks to be on the horizon – tablets first.
