Apple has made a significant policy shift by endorsing President Joe Biden’s right-to-repair law. The company is now taking steps to make it easier for people to access repair tools and documentation for their iPhones. This marks a departure from Apple’s previous stance, where only the company itself was authorized to fix its flagship smartphones.
Apple’s announcement on Tuesday aligns with President Biden’s effort to combat anti-consumer business practices. The tech giant has pledged to make all essential components, tools, and repair documentation for iPhones available to both consumers and independent contractors across the United States.
For years, Apple maintained a strict grip on iPhone repairs, limiting repair options to the company’s own services. However, in recent times, as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, Apple has gradually embraced the right-to-repair movement.
This shift began in 2019 when Apple started providing repair parts to select independent contractors, granting them the ability to repair Apple’s glass-backed phones. Furthermore, in August, Apple lent its support to right-to-repair legislation in California, which mandated that companies grant consumers and repair shops equitable access to the essential tools required to fix their devices. This move signals a significant step toward greater accessibility and affordability in iPhone repairs.
