As Apple CEO Tim Cook posed for a photo shoot with Vanity Fair wearing the new Vision Pro augmented reality headset, eagle-eyed Apple fans noticed an odd-looking iPad sitting on Cook’s desk. Its slightly distorted proportions and unusual speaker holes along the edge prompted speculation that this could be an unannounced new iPad model yet to be released.
However, upon closer inspection, that is likely not the case. The iPad spotted in Cook’s office is most probably a current 11-inch iPad Pro. The size of the Apple Pencil beside it would indicate as much. Additionally, the odd appearance is more than likely due to the wide-angle lens used by the photographer, which can distort objects along the edges of the frame.
While it’s an enticing idea that Tim Cook would casually leave an unreleased 2024 iPad lying on his desk ready to be photographed, that situation seems highly unlikely. Apple runs a tight ship when it comes to keeping leaked or unannounced products under wraps. Stringent corporate policies prevent such devices from being openly visible before their official reveal.
Considering a Vanity Fair cover shoot would involve careful preparation and staging beforehand, it’s doubtful the only people in the room were Cook and the photographer. Apple’s PR department would surely be overseeing the shoot, checking for potential issues – like having an unreleased product visible. The iPad spotted is likely just a conveniently placed prop to convey Cook’s embrace of Apple technology.
The speculation is understandable given the anticipation swirling around Apple’s tablet lineup. Rumors point to several new iPad models on the horizon for a spring release, including a 12.9-inch iPad Air and 13-inch iPad Pro. But Cook and Apple are savvier than to let those slip early, especially in official photo shoots.
So while it’s fun to imagine this is our first glimpse at the next innovation from Apple’s legendary labs, the reality is that it’s probably just an oddly-captured image of an existing iPad Pro. We’ll have to wait for the company’s famous product events to get our first look at the real future of the iPad product line.
