Apple is gearing up for a comprehensive makeover of its AirPods range, a product line that has become a cornerstone of the company’s success. Insider sources reveal that Apple plans to unveil a revamped version of its entry-level AirPods in 2024, followed by an all-new Pro model in the subsequent year.

The makeover involves significant enhancements across the board, including a redesigned earbud shape, updated case aesthetics, and improved audio quality. Additionally, Apple enthusiasts can anticipate the arrival of a fresh iteration of the AirPods Max headphones in 2024. Although specific details are shrouded in secrecy due to the confidential nature of the information, insiders hint at a thrilling update.

Apple first introduced its AirPods in 2016, a bold move that coincided with the removal of traditional headphone jacks from its devices (starting with the iPhone 7). Despite initial skepticism from consumers about cordless earbuds, the AirPods swiftly gained popularity, becoming a must-have tech gadget. These earbuds have not only dominated the market but have also become a staple add-on for iPhone buyers, contributing significantly to Apple’s Wearables, Home, and Accessories segment, which rakes in a staggering $40 billion annually.

Currently, Apple offers three tiers of wireless earbuds. The second-generation AirPods, a budget-friendly option at $129, debuted in 2019. The third-generation AirPods, introduced in 2021 at $169, occupy the mid-tier, while the top-tier $249 AirPods Pro, featuring noise cancellation, cater to the upscale market. Despite this range, the mid-tier AirPods haven’t performed as well as expected, leading Apple to reevaluate its offerings.

To address this, Apple plans to phase out both the second and third-generation AirPods next year, replacing them with two fourth-generation models. These new variants will sport a design reminiscent of the third-gen AirPods and the Pro model, featuring shorter stems. The differentiating factor will be noise cancellation, exclusive to the higher-end version, accompanied by an upgraded charging case with built-in speakers for Find My alerts, simplifying the process of locating misplaced earbuds.

Both low-end models will boast an improved fit, although replaceable tips, a feature present in the AirPods Pro, might not be included. Notably, both fourth-gen AirPods will transition to USB-C for their charging cases, aligning with Apple’s broader shift away from Lightning ports in compliance with EU regulations.

Excitement continues to build as Apple plans an update for the AirPods Max in the following year, introducing new color options without substantial alterations. Looking further ahead, the AirPods Pro are slated for a 2025 revamp, expected to feature a fresh design and an advanced chip, coupled with innovative health-related features focused on hearing.
